This direct imaging of the super Jupiter exoplanet was a huge win for JWST and will open up many new possibilities for exoplanet research.

We equip asteroid hunters like Bob, Dan, and Brian with the tools they need to prevent catastrophic asteroid impacts. We rely on the support of people like you to make this possible. 116 years ago today, a 30-meter asteroid or comet exploded in the atmosphere over Tunguska, Russia, flattening 80 million trees across 2,150 square kilometers. The explosion was 1,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Luckily, it happened in a remote area of Siberia, and nobody is thought to have been killed. June 30, the date of the event, is now recognized by the United Nations as a day to raise awareness about the risks of asteroid impacts. Today, we have the tools to avoid the same fate as the dinosaurs. 🦖☄️ Donate today and help us support planetary defense and protect Earth: https://bit.ly/4cF4vc1

The Planetary Society 🤝 SETI Institute Did you know that the SETI Institute and The Planetary Society have more in common than just a passion for the search for extraterrestrial life? Carl Sagan, one of The Planetary Society’s founders, based the main character of his famous book Contact on the SETI Institute's founder, Jill Tarter. SETI Institute ➡️ Its mission is to lead humanity's quest to understand the origins and prevalence of life and intelligence in the universe and share that knowledge with the world. The Planetary Society ➡️ One of its main goals is to elevate the search for life in space exploration by advocating for exploring potentially habitable worlds, promoting a broad approach to searching for life in our Solar System and beyond, and supporting efforts to detect and understand exoplanets.

The Solar System's largest volcano - Olymous Mons.
This animation shows the scale differences between Mars and Earth, as well as the staggering contrast between Mauna Loa and Olympus Mons. Despite Mars being roughly half the size of Earth, Olympus Mons dwarfs Mauna Loa in Hawaii. When measured from the ocean floor, Mauna Loa reaches around 10 kilometers in height, while Olympus Mons soars to a staggering 23 kilometers. 🌋 Animation: NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio, and Virginia Butcher (SSAI)
