Another look at the Thanksgiving Feast celebrated on Thursday!

Pawtucket School Department students will be treated to a Thanksgiving feast on Thursday, November 18, that includes holiday favorites made from all locally grown ingredients. The district’s six secondary schools will feature special action stations where local farm raised roasted turkey will be carved to order and served by members of each school’s staff. Pawtucket’s food management partner, Aramark typically offers a traditional Thanksgiving meal to K-12 students for lunch just prior to the holiday break; however, this is the first time the bulk of ingredients will be sourced from Rhode Island or nearby Massachusetts farms, (located 2.1 to 106 miles of district schools) according to Josh Brochu, General Manager of Aramark’s Pawtucket account. The Thanksgiving lunch menu for students features the following: Farm-raised turkey from Martinelli’s Farm in North Scituate, Rhode Island Stuffing prepared using wheat bread from Calise Bakery in Lincoln, Rhode Island; onions from Schartner Farm in Exeter, Rhode Island; sage from Sanctuary Herbs in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and Allen Farms in Westport, Mass.; and celery from 4 Town Farm in Seekonk, Mass. Apple crisp made from Steere Orchard apples grown in Greenville, Rhode Island Mashed potatoes prepared from potatoes grown at Kosinski Farms in Westfield, Mass. Butternut squash from Plainville Farm in Hadley, Mass. Aramark’s “Eat Local Challenge” Thanksgiving menu plan also aligns with goals of Pawtucket School Department’s Health & Wellness Committee, which advocates for sourcing local food for school meals when possible. Aramark personnel serve on the cross-functional committee along with district staff, administrators, parents, and community members.

The featured speakers were Valedictorian Melissa Esteban, Salutatorian Alexandria Lorenzo, and Rhode Island First Gentleman Andrew Moffit, husband of Governor Gina Raimondo and accomplished professional in the education field. Ms. Esteban will study biology at Providence College in the fall. In her address to the Class of 2019, she talked about her faith, the support she received from her teachers at Tolman, and what lies ahead for her and her classmates. “Our success can come in many forms. We might succeed in sports, academics, economics, and even being able to make a perfectly tasting plate of food. But one way or another, we always have to push ourselves to get to that goal,” she said. “Sometimes you may not end up where you thought you were going, but you will always end up where you are meant to be.” Mr. Moffit offered congratulations on behalf of the state, including the governor, and support for their future success. “I want Tolman graduates to know that the entire state—including my wife, Governor Raimondo—is rooting for you as you pursue your future endeavors, hopefully right here in Rhode Island,” he said. “My wife and I both believe that our state is better when everyone—no matter where you grew up, what you look like, what language you speak, or who you love—has a seat at the table. With exciting programs like the Rhode Island Promise Scholarship and Real Jobs Rhode Island, the state is committed to helping you succeed.” Mr. Moffit also highlighted some of the exciting opportunities for students in Rhode Island—including the Rhode Island Promise Scholarship at CCRI and Real Jobs Rhode Island—and stressed the state’s commitment to helping them succeed. 2019 Tolman graduates will attend colleges including Ana Maria College, Boston College, Community College of Rhode Island, Dea
