For we are spreading awareness of canine endocarditis.
Endocarditis is most common in middle-aged and older dogs, especially larger breeds.Endocarditis occurs when bacteria enter the bloodstream and lodge on the valves of the heart. These bacteria may originate from a systemic (body-wide) infection, a skin wound, an abscess, a surgical procedure, or even severe dental disease. Early signs may be difficult to spot, but could include weight loss and lethargy. In later stages, dogs may develop heart failure which includes signs such as cough, exercise intolerance, weakness, and shortness of breath. If your dog is experiencing any of the above symptoms, contact your veterinarian for further examination.
Please contact AVECCC Peoria at 602-491-1928 for more information on heart health!
Just like humans, dogs and even cats can experience heart health problems, including heart disease and heart failure.
Some symptoms can be subtle, so it’s important to spot early warning signs and consult a Veterinarian to rule out cardiac disease.
A few potential symptoms include:
❤ Frequent coughing
❤ Distended abdomen
❤ Pacing, restlessness, or difficulty walking
❤ Trouble breathing
❤ Lethargy and weakness
❤ Fainting or collapsing
❤ Pale or blue mucous membranes
If you identify any of these symptoms with your pet contact AVECCC Peoria at 602-491-1928

This is a reminder that both dogs and cats are known to ingest antifreeze (an unfortunately sweet tasting substance). This often occurs when antifreeze isn't stored properly or isn't placed out of paw's reach. Symptoms of ingestion include vomiting, lethargy, increased thirst and urination, loss of appetite, wobbly gait, and seizures. Antifreeze can cause serious nervous system damage, kidney failure, and death. All it takes is less than a tablespoon!
If your pet has ingested antifreeze, there is an antidote! However, it is EXTREMELY important to get treatment for your pet as soon as possible. Contact AVECCC at (602)491-1928 right away. You can also call the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888)426-4435 ☣️
We are still searching for this sweet girl!!! Please keep your eyes out. Last seen near 24th St. and Campbell.
Did you know that dogs and cats need transfusions, just like humans.
They can lose blood in an accident, surgery, or have life threatening diseases
that destroy red blood cells or prevent blood cells from clotting.
Being able to administer blood products when needed saves lives!
AVECCC partners with Canine Blood Heroes and operate as a collection site.
Our teams are always looking for potential donors that meet these requirements:
1-7 years old
55 pounds or over
Happy, healthy, and friendly with strangers
Able to lie still on their side for 20-30 minutes with minimal movement
Can have a 2" spot of hair shaved from their neck area during each draw
If your pet meets these requirements and you would like to apply for a potential donor relationship please contact AVECCC or Canine Blood Heroes for more information!

Pet owners always do their best to keep their pets safe, but animals tend to explore the world with their mouths and can accidentally ingest poisonous substances. The ASPCA compiled a list of the top pet toxins with a few examples:
⚠ Over the counter medications: Ibuprofen, naproxen, cold medications, and herbal supplements
⚠ Prescription medications: ADHD medication, antidepressants, and heart medication
⚠ Food: Xylitol (artificial sweetener), grapes, raisins, onions, chocolate, macadamia nuts, and garlic
⚠ Veterinary products: Animal medications - especially ones with added flavor that could be mistaken for a treat
⚠ Household Items: Paint, glue, and cleaning products (even natural products)
⚠ Rodenticides: Another toxin that could be misjudged for a treat - never leave rodenticides out where your pet can find them
⚠ Insecticides: Ant bait, bug spray, and foggers
⚠ Indoor & Outdoor Plants: Autumn crocus, azalea, lilies, sago palms, tulips - to name a few
⚠ Garden Products: Fertilizers, herbicides, and soil enhancements
Be sure to take precautions around your home to ensure the safety of your pet!
If you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic substance, don’t wait. Contact AVECCC immediately at (602)491-1928.
You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
