We’re closing out Women’s History Month with one of Peoria’s most prominent historical figures. Lydia Moss Bradley founded Bradley University in 1896 to honor her late husband and their six children, all of whom died young. A dedicated philanthropist, she donated the land on which OSF St. Francis Medical Center now sits, helped establish the first park system in Illinois and built a home to care for widowed and childless women, just to name a few of her endeavors. A pioneer in many areas, Bradley was the first female member of a national bank board in the United States and one of the first American women ever to draft a prenuptial agreement to protect her assets. She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1998. Lydia Moss Bradley died in 1908 at age 91. You can visit her grave in the Mt. Prospect section. Her father, Captain Zealy Moss, the only known Revolutionary War solider at Springdale, is also buried there. #springdale1854 #peorians #bradleyuniversity #WomensHistoryMonth
