Joe Pye w**d is normally a big, impressive pollinator plant, but if you've got a smaller garden, we've got some great varieties for you! Topping out at under 3' tall are Ruby and Red Dwarf, both Illinois natives. Little Joe gets a bit taller, growing to 4', and Gateway grows up to 5' tall, with big, dramatic flowers. All of them need a spot with regular water and full sun. Whichever type you choose, both you and the butterflies will get to enjoy the billowy plumes from summer through fall!

We've FINALLY got a monach (1st image) in the butterfly house this week! For company, its got a couple of American Ladies (2nd image,) a whole bunch of swallowtails (3rd image,) and several woolly bears (4th image.) These will turn into some type of tiger moth, but won't be sure which until they've transformed.

Blue Fortune Anise Hyssop is a multi-use herb, as well as a butterfly & hummingbird magnet. It bears lavender spikes of flowers mid-summer into fall, making a good cut flower. Statice is a graceful cut flower staple that’s been out of reach in our climate zone, until now! Dazzle Rocks is a recently available variety, hardy to -22°F, and bearing graceful clouds of lavender flowers all summer long. Very attractive to pollinators, and great in both dried and fresh flower arrangements.

We've got two different species in the butterfly house right now: our American Lady caterpillars have gone into the chrysalis stage, they've got lots of Eastern Black Swallowtails for company! Need a shade garden showstopper? Ligularia is a stately shade plant that bears brilliant yellow summer blooms. Easy to grow as long as it gets regular water. Add one to a shady spot this summer, and enjoy its bright blooms year after year!

Coreopsis are a bit less well known than they deserve to be, maybe because "coreopsis" (prounounced cory-op-sis,) doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, and their other name, "tickseed," is even worse! Regardless of what you call them, coreopsis are a bright summer bloomer, like sunshine in flower form. They like a warm, sunny spot in the garden, and some types, like Zagreb coreopsis, will fill in to form a dramatic blanket of bright yellow flowers. If you could use a little more sunshine in your gardening life, give these golden beauties a try!

Pearly Everlasting (1st photo) is a pretty prairie native with silvery leaves that contrast well with brightly colored flowers in a perennial bed. White clusters of everlasting flowers are great in dried arrangements.

Pussytoes (2nd photo) is a cute, small-scale native groundcover & good problem solver plant with soft, gray-green leaves and little fuzzy white flowerheads in spring.

Both plants like a sunny spot with moderate water. If you’ve got a spot like that, and you’d like more butterflies in your garden, give them a try!

If you’re in the market for a blue spruce tree, we have bad news and good news.

The bad news is that the popular Colorado Blue Spruce, planted practically everywhere in Illinois landscapes, is almost guaranteed to die of disease sooner or later. Prone to a number of maladies, (Rhizosphaera needle cast, Cytospora canker, Sudden Needle Drop, Stigmina, spider mites, etc.,) they usually die from the bottom up, with bare branches appearing gradually until the entire tree succumbs. (Pictured 1st image.) Treatments can slow the tree’s death, but there’s no cure.

The good news is that spruces of other species aren’t prone to the same diseases. For good blue color (and less stabby needles!) we recommend varieties like Paul’s Select Norway Spruce or Arctos Siberian Spruce (pictured 2nd image.) Jeana Phlox is the Perennial Plant Association’s 2024 plant of the year! A native selection, discovered growing wild in Tennessee, it swept the Mt. Cuba trials, coming out as their top rated phlox, in part because it was more attractive to butterflies than any other phlox they grew, and also because of its exceptional disease resistance. If you’d like to try it for yourself, we’ve got some in stock! Grows well with moderate water in full sun, although it will tolerate a little shade as well.

Check out the cool Zebra Swallowtail that Nadia spotted! Did you know that these beautiful butterflies eat only Pawpaw tree leaves as caterpillars? We’re guessing that’s what this butterfly came for, because we've got Pawpaw fruit trees in stock right now.
