Deviled Eggery
Where ideas for a healthy community are hatched.
Mighty fast scythers cleared over an acre in 22 seconds! Thanks so much to our growing scything community đđź. The health of our soil is rapidly improving thanks to this practice, and we are so grateful for the community efforts to scythe instead of using heavy machinery. Theres always more grass to cut, so learn to scythe with us, itâs a blast! https://www.deviledeggery.org/scythe
EDIT: total - 489 books! Milagros wins - which means she gets to set up next yearâs display lol. End edit.

We know something you donât know! And that is: how many board books did we collect at this yearsâ Deviled Eggery book drive for the Sonoma County Nurse Family Partnership?
Under the direction of bookdrive coordinator extraordinaire Nancy Porter, we expanded the drive to multiple schools in the community (Rainbow Bridge Montessori, Bright Skies Montessori, Pepper Preschool, Childrenâs Multicultural Center, Childrenâs Corner, Sunbeam Nature School, PLUS the library and Grand Central Cafe and Barefoot Books distributor Kathleen von Raesfeld.)
⌠All thatâs left is for you to guess how many books we collected (and no counting!). The winner gets ⌠to create next yearâs display?
Good morning, from Saill Whiteâs barn.
Our most recent event - so honored to be a part of this movement. To be a part of our harm reduction team, go to https://www.deviledeggery.org/harm-reduction.

Overdoses are preventable, letâs put an end to them.
Training at Casa Grande High School instructs parents, students how to treat opioid overdoses Organizers billed the May 8 Narcan training and distribution event as the first of its kind at a Petaluma school, where it drew over 100 adults, parents and students at Casa Grande High School.
Saturday - maybe our favorite day of the year (ok, we have a lot of favorite days)! Come learn about the cutting edge of land management with the sharpest crew in town. We are going to take down an acre of grass and weeds with exactly zero carbon emissions - once you get the swing of it, you will want your own scythe too. Sign up at https://www.deviledeggery.org/scythe.
2 years ago today. I never could have imagined this adventure. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of the Deviled Eggery. â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸
Weâve hatched! Located where Petalumaâs âThe Eggeryâ used to host art shows, belly dancers, a chicken ranch, concerts, a cafe, and more, this new organization will honor its legacy while building new relationships to support the community. We eggsist to support the greater Petaluma area with programs related to sustainable agriculture, mental health support, visual and performing arts, and social justice. Join us at https://www.deviledeggery.org/ and spread the word!
What an honor to be included in such a heartfelt post!

Book Drive Update ~ The books are pouring in from preschools and businesses across town - over 300 books already - but we arenât stopping yet!
Several local daycares have signed up to join our Nurse-Family Partnership board book drive this year, including:
Rainbow Bridge Montessori
Bright Skies Montessori
Pepper Preschool
Childrenâs Multicultural Center
Childrenâs Corner
Sunbeam Nature School
PLUS the library and Grand Central Cafe are involved too, as well as Barefoot Books distributor Kathleen von Raesfeld.
All of this outreach is thanks to our star book drive volunteer, Nancy Porter!
If you have any board books (new or used) to contribute, please drop them off at Grand Central (226 Weller Street), the porch at 19 Burlington, or by the door at the 4456 Bodega Ave, or leave a comment here and we will come and pick them up. Gift cards to Copperfields are awesome too!
Nurse Family Partnership provides first time mothers with support from early pregnancy until the childâs second birthday - and this includes visiting nurses who work with new parents to learn to read to their babies! The Deviled Eggery has been honored to work with them to collect books for first-time parents in Sonoma County.
EDIT: NOTE THE DATE CHANGE! The Matriarchs have spoken (as have their sons and daughters) and we will not have our Learn to Scythe event on Mother's Day!
A crowd fave - you saw us at Butter & Eggs Days, now come on out and learn how to get cutty with us! No experience (or equipment, or land, or anything) necessary. RSVP at https://www.deviledeggery.org/scythe
One of our most somber and important events - please join us to learn about Casa Grande student Josh Whiteâs life and legacy, and learn how you can prevent the unimaginable from happening in your community. RSVP requested at DeviledEggery.org/narcan (for seating and supplies). Thank you Petaluma City Schools, FACE to FACE, and Sonoma County Department of Health for partnering with us to raise awareness, develop skills, and deliver life-saving interventions.
What fun it has been to watch this niche community grow⌠https://www.deviledeggery.org/scythe
Huge thanks to Milagros Ott, Gabe Brown, and all of our awesome volunteers!
Itâs the eve of the big day, and we are ready â¤ď¸
The Deviled Eggery community kicked a** this weekend! Our Fiber Foragers group hosted a half day workshop starting with shepherd-led info on shearing, then continuing with hands-on practice with picking, scouring, dying, carding, felting, and spinning.
Our Scything Crew helped out at Steamers Landing Park to mow the area for Friends of the Petaluma River while 6 trash cleanup volunteers picked up 75 pounds of trash in just a half mile of Bodega Ave (the majority of which was alcohol bottles, which is kind of terrifying). Next, we represented all things DâEggery at the Blue Zones launch party, where we got to interact with hundreds of people, perhaps our favorite being the kids participating in the wild animals scavenger hunt that we put together for them.
Petaluma is a pretty rad place for community-minded people. â¤ď¸
We had a tiny visitor today!
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!
Sunday, April 14
2 Opportunities to get involved - while our scything crew is out doing neighborhood service, we will be cleaning up the Bodega Ave roadside (9am-noon) and reading books to littles (11am-3pm) to promote our book drive at the Blue Zones Launch Party. We could use a handful of hands at each event, for an hour or 2 or all day long!
We also have our Yarn-It event Saturday ⌠so basically clear your calendar for some Deviled Eggery community fun this weekend!
Comment here to get hooked up with any of these events, we promise a good time. đŁđ
Anyone wanna come help rep the Deviled Eggery Scything Group at the Butter and Eggs Days parade? Come live on the edge with the sharpest group in town! Scythes, striped socks, and grass provided! Comment here and we will send you the rsvp info.

Thatâs great news, but we still need your help!
Nurse Family Partnership provides first time mothers with support from early pregnancy until the childâs second birthday - and this includes visiting nurses who work with new parents to learn to read to their babies! The Deviled Eggery has been honored to work with them to collect books for first-time parents in Sonoma County.
In May 2023, their mobile book library was down to 15 books, but not after our 2023 book drive! Thanks to the help of Readersâ Books (Sonoma), Copperfields (Petaluma), Nancy Porter, Dawn Gaynor Silva, Julie Milazzo, Ashleigh Bowman, and so many more donors, the 2023 book drive brought in over 400 board books! They were delivered in time for the annual NFP graduation.
Hereâs what one nurse in the program has to say about having access to board books for the families they work with:
âOne of my clients whose son hadnât been too into sitting down and reading brought up the idea of trying to get him interested in books. She stated that she was also concerned about his language development and worried that since she didnât have too many books at home, she was letting him down and that he wouldnât develop verbally. Finances were tight for her and she asked if I could bring her some books to start their home library. At our next visit I brought her four books and she was so excited to read them with her son!â - Sarah Hinck, RN, BSN, PHN
Letâs collect more books for more first time parents! If you would like to be involved in helping us collect more books, please sign up at deviledeggery.org/volunteer. You can help spread the word, share this post and tag your friends who have kids, or circulate with families from daycares and schools that may have outgrown their baby books. You can also help by making a donation via a gift card to Copperfields (shop local!).
Send us a message for your drop off locations!

Good morning, spring.
Scything Groupâs 2024 Opening Day! We noshed on homemade cinnamon rolls and coffee thanks to our gracious host, peened and sharpened our rusty blades as we caught up after many months awaiting green pastures, and then cut grass with muscles over motors. Join the fun at deviledeggery.org/scythe, beginners welcome!
A new pet at the D'Eggery! Ok, not really, but this guy was super cute and we were thrilled that we saw him struggling in a bucket of water in time to save him. It also was good lesson to us about making open water sources (aka buckets catching rainwater) safe for wildlife, big and small. Read about our new friend here: https://www.deviledeggery.org/bloggery/the-sweet-sound-of-frog-songs
YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS! The Deviled Eggery Scything Group's 2024 Opening Day is Saturday! Spend your morning on an incredible property in the heart of west county, between Tomales and Petaluma near Spring Hill. This will be a good event for new mowers and as always there will be tools available to borrow.

Join us via https://www.deviledeggery.org/volunteer or comment here if you'd like to write, edit, brainstorm, post, promote, publish, or otherwise support the documentation of the wild work we do at the Deviled Eggery!
Let us know with a comment here or an email if youâd like to attend. Weâd love to have more community support around learning about preventing drug overdoses.
The Deviled Eggery Market is open! Well⌠by appointment. So if you see anything that interest you, send us a message so we can invite you over. With a few exceptions, 100% of the money goes directly to Una Vida.* The last day to pick anything up before Christmas is December 22.
One item we would like to feature especially is this football galaxy chicken rock painted by Casa Grande student Melissa Puente. Melissa has aspirations of being a professional artist, and this is her first time selling her art. Sheâs been working during lunch and after school in âMs. Lelandâsâ classroom Casa Grande High on her rock paintings. The Deviled Eggery is the proud purchaser of her first ever sold art, but you can be the second.
Melissa has a knack for combining reality with humor. This particular rock is $75, and sheâs donating 50% of the profits to Una Vida!
Itâs one of a kind and out of this world. When she is famous, you wonât regret owning one of her first professional pieces. đâď¸đâ¨đđ
Come shop for some locally made products where the profits go to a good cause.
* Some of the profits made by local artists are shared 50/50 with the artists and Una Vida (We support local artists!).
What a day! Thank you all for your enthusiasm and support with our Farm to Family fundraiser for Una Vida. We raised over $4000 for food security, contributed to the local artist economy, and had a whole day of community engagement. Huge thanks to the local artists, the live demonstrations and activity leaders, and our amazing volunteers who helped transform the Deviled Eggery into a gorgeous display of artisan products. Where else could you watch wool being spun into handmade beanies, make a clay print, then pick up chicken earrings and rocks, strawberry-vanilla jam, ceramics, barnwood signs, succulent gardens, and then with your hands full of these awesome products, meet a new neighbor all in one place?
The Deviled Eggery is so grateful for all of you who participated, decorated, shopped, set up, cleaned up, donated, baked, painted, or helped in any other way
