What is Melasma ?
Melasma is a skin condition that causes patches and spots, usually on the face, which are darker than your natural skin tone.
Hormonal factors, such as pregnancy, oral contraceptive pills, hormonal therapy, and mild ovarian dysfunction, are considered to be some of the most common factors in the development of melasma .

What is Sun Spots ?
Sunspots are harmless, flat brown spots that develop on areas of skin frequently exposed to the sun.
Ultraviolet (UV) light speeds up the production of melanin, a natural pigment that gives skin its color. On skin that has had years of sun exposure, age spots appear when melanin becomes clumped or is produced in high concentrations.

What is Hyperpigmentation ?
Hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in melanin. Melanin is a natural pigment that gives our skin, hair and eyes their color .
When your skin cells react to damage or irritation by making extra melanin, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the result.

Hi I’m Latiyah , the face behind skyn Haven .
I thought it was about time I give a proper introduction.

I’ve been a licensed esthetician since October 2021 ( Time Flies ) although I’ve been into skincare forever .

Acne and hyperpigmentation has been my passion since the very beginning.
I’ve been dealing with acne since a teenager, so I know first hand how this skin condition can be emotionally draining and interfere with your everyday life .

Helping my clients who’ve been suffering from acne for a long time is such a rewarding feeling . Seeing the changes it makes in them is the best feeling 🫶🏽

Many women experience acne during pregnancy. It’s most common during the first and second trimesters.

An increase in hormones called androgens can cause the glands in your skin to grow and produce more sebum . This oil can clog pores and lead to bacteria, inflammation, and breakouts.
There are a few skincare ingredients you should avoid during your pregnancy, like salicylic acid , Retin A or Tretinoin .
Ingredients that are great for acne and pregnancy safe ( at low percentages) are benzoyl peroxide , Azelaic acid and glycolic acid .

What are your breakouts telling you ?? Here are some reasons you could be breaking out in certain areas of your face and body .

Many factors, like stress, hair or skin care products that may clog pores, your family history , or your diet can increase your likelihood of experiencing acne as an adult. So can your hormones.
Hormonal acne is acne caused by fluctuating hormone levels .
Two prominent players in hormonal acne are hormones you might already recognize: androgens (like testosterone) and estrogen.
The way your sebaceous glands function is directly affected by the balance of androgens and estrogen in your body. Androgens stimulate them and increase production of oily sebum, while estrogen inhibits them and the production of androgens. So higher levels of androgens could mean a greater risk of oily skin and more opportunities for pimples to form, and higher levels of estrogen could mean less oil on your skin and a lower risk of pimples. The ratio between these hormones isn’t the only hormonal factor that may lead to acne, but if you’re experiencing changes in either one, that may be the source.
Women often experience hormonal acne before or during their period (which is why you may have also heard the term “period acne”). Hormonal acne may also occur during pregnancy or at the onset of menopause and perimenopause. Stopping or starting hormonal birth control is another potential trigger .
