🎥 ⚾️ August is about to be a busy month for Philadelphia philm phanatics!
Several major local festivals are happening this month, including BlackStar, which kicks us off with a long weekend full of feature film premieres, curated themed short film programs, panels and parties, and Scribe Video Center’s Street Movies! which continues through the month with outdoor screenings in different Philly neighborhoods.

🌳 There are also many opportunities to enjoy the last full month of summer with free outdoor film screenings, such as University City District Presents: Movies in Clark Park and Movie Night at Bartram’s Garden.

We will be watching the 1983 Video Letter, a remarkable 64-minute compilation exchange of video letters that took place between video artists Shuji Terayama and Shuntaro Tanikawa. This screening is part of 'Community of Images: Japanese Moving Image Artists in the US, 1960s-1970s', an exhibition that explores experimental moving images created by Japanese artists and their connections to North America.

Continuing from last month, cinéSPEAK Under the Stars has two more screenings in Clark Park, and the Philadelphia Latino Arts & Film Festival has additional programming throughout the month. We are also celebrating cinéSPEAK Journal Editor-in-Chief Kristal Sotomayor for screening her short documentary Expanding Sanctuary at Scribe Video Center.

🎬 Lil’ Filmmakers was founded in 2009, with the aim of bringing the city’s youngest artists into the film industry. Lil' Filmmakers provides youth in Philadelphia with the tools and knowledge to pursue filmmaking and other artistic projects. They teach young people to use film and media “as a tool to overcome societal and personal barriers and prepare them for career opportunities in the creative industry.”

🌸 Festival season in Philadelphia hard launches this month, with Tri-Co Film Festival, cinéSPEAK Under the Stars, and the Philadelphia Latino Arts & Film Festival. Make sure to take advantage of these amazing opportunities to see Philadelphia premieres of independent films from around the world, as well as short films from local emerging creatives. And of course, it’s always a joy to get to watch movies outside as the days are warming up–lounging on a blanket with friends and puppies, eating mango water ice, and waiting for the sun to set.

🎥 Other Highlights—include a special screening of The Command Center to Bring Women Home with an accompanying poetry workshop, a Producers’ Forum with the renowned filmmaker Haile Gerima, and a screening of in love, in memory (work-in-progress), a portrait documentary about the intimate effects of gun violence in Allentown, co-directed by Drew Swedberg and Shalon Buskirk.
