As a part of Inside-Out's 25th Anniversary, we reflect on and remember some in our Inside-Out family who have passed on — and others who may not have been included in this piece.
We bring them to our minds and hold them in our hearts. May the spirit of each of these instructors and former students live inside of us and inspire us as we continue to move forward. We are blessed to have had them in our lives.

In 1997, Inside-Out started with a class of 30 students and one instructor. Now, 25 years later, there are more than 1,300 educators and over 60,000 inside and outside alumni throughout the world. We're so deeply grateful for your continued help as we continue to grow and expand – and we hope that you'll consider making an end-of-year donation. With your help, we can continue our work and make an even greater impact. https://www.insideoutcenter.org/supporting-inside-out.html

By shifting the focus from incarceration to education for everyone involved in the criminal justice system, Inside-Out aims to create systemic change within these institutions while positively impacting society at large. For nearly 25 years, the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program has engaged thousands of students and educators in programs that build bridges within their communities. The voices of six Inside-Out alumni offer powerful and immediate insight into the qualities that make Inside-Out such an impactful program. Hear stories from each of their unique perspectives, and gain a deeper understanding of the program’s impact. We'd like to extend a special thank you to the panelists from our December 14th session: John Pace (Phila.), Jesse Dorsz (MD), April Lee(Phila.), Kenny Matthews(WV), Giovanni Reid (Phila.), and Joe Schwartz (Phila.). These six people beautifully express the spirit of Inside-Out — the importance of breaking down walls, the power of dialogue, the discovery of one’s voice, and the humility, openness, and empathy that are integral to the Inside-Out journey. An Inside-Out Global Town Hall on Reimagining Justice
This special “global town hall” is on Reimagining Justice, and has as its centerpiece a T.V. series called “Philly D.A.” — about Larry Krasner, Philadelphia’s progressive District Attorney. The eight-part series is a riveting, up-close look at Krasner’s election and the changes he has been making — with all of the requisite complexity and political drama that ensues. A special aspect of this series is that Ted Passon, one of its co-creators and directors, took an Inside-Out course back in the early 2000s.
We will watch the first episode together, followed by an in-depth conversation with a fascinating panel that will be focused on the possibilities and challenges of making change. This event provides a stepping-off point for us all, wherever we are located, to think about how we might reimagine justice. Though the series takes place in Philadelphia, it can be regarded as a harbinger of wider social change writ large.

Listen to Episode #12 of our podcast where Christopher Lee Lamoureux reflects on Inside-Out and how it impacted his life upon reentry! Tune in here: https://www.insideoutcenter.org/podcast-episode-12.html “To any folks who may listen to this, look for opportunities to support incarcerated folks. By helping to deliver a sense of purpose and meaning, it breathes life into hopeless situations. Thank you to all those who have made this a life's mission and a life's purpose. It's definitely changed the trajectory in my life. And I believe it's the case for anybody who takes this experience. It's pretty special." - Christopher Lamoureux #education #reentry #insideoutprisonexchangeprogram
Please share this opportunity with your network! Inside-Out is coordinating college courses at Arcadia, Swarthmore, and Temple Universities. Courses are focused on the criminal legal system and justice issues. Most of the classes begin at the end of August and continue through early December one afternoon or evening each week. All of those interested who are formerly incarcerated and/or justice-involved will receive 3 college credits upon completion of the course (or 3.5 continuing education credits, if the class is taken through Temple). There is no cost, but participants will need a computer and Internet access (for Zoom). All classes are online and start this fall semester.
