Bees pollinating Aphrodite witchhazel.
Last week, we noticed honeybees were busily pollinating our Aphrodite witchhazel (Hamamelis × intermedia 'Aphrodite') on an unseasonably warm day. 🐝 Aphrodite is one of the earliest and most fragrant witchhazels at the Arboretum. It tends to retain its old leaves which partially obscure the flower, although the bees don’t have any problem finding them!

Robins at the Arboretum
With the cold and snow hitting areas farther north last week, the Arboretum is welcoming flocks of hundreds of robins. These birds are feasting on wild berries, like this American holly (Ilex opaca), and also foraging for worms and insects. Many will seek refuge here all winter. ❄️

White Pine Removal at the Morris Arboretum
Earlier this month, our arborist team removed most of a damaged white pine that became a hazard to surrounding trees. What's left is about 20 feet of trunk for cavity nesters, who rely on standing dead wood, or snags, for habitat.
Watch the video for the removal process. 🌲📽️
