Mad Scientist in a Wood Shop
A Cabinetmaker Wood Artist for 44 years I’ve been working with wood for 41 years. Wood is my pallet.

Most of that time as a cabinetmaker, but the last 10 years doing wood art. I love flows, curves, curls, and surprising colors found in wood. I dream designs and then play with form. I paint pictures and forms from the natural designs of the wood I find.

Busy in the shop cabinetmaking. But, look what greeted me at the shop today! (Hibiscus❣️)

Projects have taken me away from ART for a bit, but I’m excited to be moving back to it. I’ve got a couple of new ideas. But first I’ve got my planer pulled apart for minor repair. Where’s the greese gun when I need it? Anyway I do have 2 pieces I’ve put together in spare time, the last couple of months.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT - Diana Swan
STUDIO #19

Diane Swan Gallery
Media: Mixed Media, Woodworking
Website: diswanwoodgal.com

My style evolved from my love of wood, curves, and soft edges. I have been a cabinetmaker for 43 years. I see beauty and movement in wood and let the material tell me where it wants to go.

My art is all about the pieces used to create an image. I have always enjoyed drawing, so I’ve taken that love into wood. I also look for special woods when I go for supplies; purple poplar, curly maple, figured wormy maple, walnut crotches, unusual colors and designs that naturally occur in the wood. Then I go into Photoshop and take my drawings or images and create patterns. These patterns are cut up and I search my scrap for just the right flow, and color. Last year I added colored plastic mirror discs and epoxy to my pieces. The best time is when I oil the pieces. The images pop, and I get to see if my vision of color and grain worked. I love making a big mess, and having a few pieces going at once. Not all of them make it to the final exhibit but it’s the playing and imaging that I enjoy the most. I hope you enjoy it too.

I’m excited to be showing in my new shop this year. Please come and see my process at our home.

You can read about my wood journey on my website www.diswanwoodgal.com and see some of my past cabinet and art designs.

Working on a new piece with 2 exotic woods that I’ve never used before, canary wood and leopard wood. All with FSC grading, (sustainable). Can’t wait to put finish on them and see all the reds and spots pop out.
Definitely a challenge. Hard brittle to work.
Hahaha the mad wood scientist cackles!!! (We are approaching Halloween!).
Not sure where this is going at this point. But that’s what I love…… anywhere!
