Even with everyone’s best efforts, and guided by the chain of survival, there’s still only a 3 in 10 chance the person will survive.

If you just do CPR, and forget to call an ambulance, that drops to 1 in 20 (someone will call eventually – but you could do better!)

If you do nothing except call an ambulance, that drops to just 1 in 50!

Defibrillation is the only therapy to treat someone in cardiac arrest. Every minute that a person in Sudden Cardiac Arrest does not receive defibrillation, their chances of survival drop by 7-10%, making rapid defibrillation imperative for survival and one of the key steps in saving a life from Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

With the events at last night’s NFL game, I felt compelled to make a post.

The truth of the matter is that what happened to Damar Hamlin, can happen to anyone while playing sports. It is a very rare occurrence, but there’s always a risk of a blow to the chest causing an arrhythmia, which can then lead to cardiac arrest.

I’m writing this not to capitalize on such a tragic event, but to bring awareness specifically to youth sports leagues and CPR training. Do you know if your child’s coach is CPR certified? Are there AED’s available on site?

If you do not know, please ask the administrator of your league. If the answer is no, then please request that the coaches get certified. If, God forbid, anything like this would happen to any child, I want them to have the same quick response that Damar Hamlin had last night, which will greatly increase the chance of survival from an event like this.

If your teams are not in our area, I will help you to find a training. If you are in the Pittsburgh area, I will offer a greatly discounted rate because I just want all coaches to be trained.
