Text Description: [animated] What is Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disorder (CMT)? CMT is named after the three physicians who first identified the disorder in 1886. CMT is a genetic nerve disorder that affects motor and sensory nerves. CMT is typically caused by a genetic variation inherited from one or both parents. The causative variant determines which of the 30+ forms of CMT is expressed. The five main forms of CMT are each inherited differently and display distinctive symptoms. CMT 1: transmission of nerve impulses is reduced; CMT 2: strength of nerve impulses is reduced; CMT 3 (Dejerine-Sottas Syndrome): severely delayed development and significant reduction in nerve conduction present in early childhood; CMT 4: muscle weakness or changes in touch or temperature sensation; CMTX *: insulation of nerve cells is affected by variations to the X chromosome *often affects more biological males more severely than biological females.
