The Sharing the Light Speaker Series welcomes Fr. Timothy P. Kesicki, S.J. speaking about Jesuit slaveholding, racial healing, and reconciliation.
The Sharing the Light Speaker Series welcomes Fr. Timothy P. Kesicki, S.J. While President of the Jesuits in the US and Canada, news came to light that the Jesuits had used slaves both in their early missionary efforts and in establishing educational institutions, including Georgetown.Fr. Tim made it his mission to identify the Descendants, formally apologizing to them for the sins committed and looking for a means of reconciliation. In 2017, Fr. Tim led A Liturgy of Remembrance, Contrition, and Hope for the ancestors. A sincere and thoughtful dialogue between the Descendants and the U.S. Jesuit Provincials ensued giving birth to the Descendants Truth and Reconciliation Foundation. The 501(C)3 foundation has three goals: to fund programs which promote racial healing in institutions and communities, to provide educational opportunities for Descendants of Jesuit slaveholding, and to offer emergency help for impoverished elderly and infirm Descendants. Join us to learn more of this important story about the spirit of truth, racial healing, and reconciliation.
