Union Project, Pittsburgh, PA Videos

Videos by Union Project in Pittsburgh. Union Project uses the arts to bridge gaps between communities.

We've got an amazing batch of classes and workshops lined up for our Fall Session, and we can't wait to have you back in the studio. All of our most popular programs are back, and we also have two brand new classes from Visiting Teaching Artists this fall - check them out at the link in our bio!

Union Project's Ceramics classes and workshops provide fun and meaningful opportunities to explore, learn, and practice creating in clay. Class sessions occur four times per year. Each class session includes basic to advanced multi-week classes, Wheel 101s, opportunities for Teens and Tweens, and seasonal ceramic offerings. Firing workshops also explore different firing methods like gas reduction, soda, and Raku.

PS- Our social media manager is out of the office this week, and this post is being made through the power of magic ✨️ Comments and messages will get responses after August 12!

It’s the reel reveal! For the Clay Olympics, our Deputy Director Michelle made a bunch of Clay medals in 3 different unglazed clay bodies. In the previous post, we asked what she used to make the star imprint in those medals. We got lots of creative responses (my favorite was *magic*) but no one got it quite right. Check out this video to see the correct answer. Some background context is that our intrepid Michelle buys carrots 25lbs at a time and is almost always cronching on them throughout the day. #UnionProject #UnionProjectPittsburgh #ClayOlympics #RemakeLearningDays #ClayMedals #StarImprint #MichelleLovesCarrots #ReelReveal

In a recent discussion with one of Union Project's Collaborative Studio artists, Alecia Dawn Young (@thealeciadawn), our Executive Director, Jeffrey Dorsey, was reminded of how having an artistic practice can be more than just time to build technical skills, but also space for deeper introspection, cultural expression, and building understanding between people from different backgrounds. Today is the last day to show your support for Union Project, so that we can continue to give voice to and promote the diverse cultures of all people through craft, create opportunities to express and heal individually and collectively through clay, and offer meaningful clay experiences to our youngest learners. https://unionproject.org/support/

As excitement and interest in clay has grown, so have Union Project's efforts to foster creative clay exploration for all people. 🧑🏾‍🎨 We continued to support artists of color via our Collaborative Studio. These emerging artists presented their own panel called Black Clay Bodies at the National Council for the Education of Ceramic Arts Conference. 🎨 We partnered with Crisis Center North and invited survivors of domestic violence to the studio to express themselves and share their stories through clay. Crisis Center North then presented an exhibit of this work in our Great Hall along with a reception inviting the artists and viewers to be in community with one another. 🛞 We expanded our reach to students who don't have access to a clay studio. Our teaching artists brought clay to Kindergarteners at the Duquesne School District, worked with high schoolers at the Center that Cares, and delivered free programs via our Wheel Mobile to students of all ages across the county. With your support, we can continue to give voice and promote the diverse cultures of all people through craft, create opportunities to express and heal individually and collectively through clay, and offer meaningful clay experiences to our youngest learners. https://unionproject.org/support/

Union Project Executive Director, Jeffrey Dorsey recently had the opportunity to spend time in conversation with one of Union Project's Collaborative Studio artists, Alecia Dawn Young (@thealeciadawn). She invited him to offer feedback on some beautiful ceramic ornaments she was making in the studio. Before long, they found themselves in a deep conversation about family, the holidays, and how they choose to celebrate in ways that encourage tradition, but at the same time, acknowledge the past and the roles their ancestors played in it. He was reminded of how having an artistic practice can be more than just time to build technical skills, but also space for deeper introspection, cultural expression, and building understanding between people from different backgrounds. Union Project intentionally fosters these types of creative practices through clay. This year, more and more community members like Alecia turned to Union Project to create, learn, and connect through clay. Will you consider a donation to ensure that we can continue to give voice to and promote the diverse cultures of all people through craft, create opportunities to express and heal individually and collectively through clay, and offer meaningful clay experiences to our youngest learners? https://unionproject.org/support/

“With your support, every year, we can expand and offer a few more opportunities to more students in more schools so they get their first introduction to clay.” - Michelle Clesse, Union Project Deputy Director TODAY (9/27/23) is the last day to give to this fall campaign! Will you support clay today, @followers? https://unionproject.org/support/

“It’s so relaxing and hands-on.” Will you help us continue to offer clay programs for students like Anna at COB and other schools before our campaign closes on 9/27? It is essential for youth to have access to space, resources, and guidance that nurture their curiosity and creativity, connect them with a community, and foster a lifelong interest in learning. With your donation, we can provide rich experiences for children and make sure every child in Allegheny County has their first experience with clay! Donate online (link in bio) or via a check made out to Union Project, and mailed to: Union Project 801 N. Negley Ave Pittsburgh, PA 15206

"I would love to have the opportunity to practice more and practice more techniques. Think back to the first time you experienced clay. Do you remember the feeling of squeezing clay between your fingers, or centering it on a wheel and trying to form a vessel? We recently worked with students from City of Bridges High School, practicing handbuilding and wheel throwing techniques in our ceramics studio. Hear what their clay experience was like, directly from them.

Watch our talented instructors as they remove hot vessels from the Raku kiln. Students immersed themselves in the mesmerizing art of Raku during their workshop this weekend. From the red hot kiln to the combustible materials in these cans, this video (taken by an enthusiastic student) captures the essence of this fiery workshop at Union Project. #UnionProject #RakuFiring #ClayEducation
