Jimmy the long-spine porcupinefish
Don’t make him angry. You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry… Mild-mannered Jimmy is the secret identity of the long-spine porcupinefish. The Incredible Hulk of the Aquarium, he can inflate his body and almost double in size when threatened. Sharp spines provide this aqua-Avenger with a second defense against predators.

Penguin egg update! Our vet staff checked all four eggs to see the progression status. The two fertile eggs that we originally showed now have a much smaller air cell. The cell is the empty space that can be seen while candling and the dark area of the egg is where the chick is. This smaller air cell means the chick is developing well. The next step would be the chick pipping, a process of tapping the beak against the inside of the shell to begin hatching. If egg development continues to be successful, this process should begin this week! The other two eggs (the last two in the video) unfortunately are not fertile. This can be seen by the visible yolk and no evidence of blood vessels. Stay tuned for more updates!

Penguin Breeding Season
Happy World Penguin Day 🐧 It’s breeding season at the Aquarium, and we are excited to share that we have four macaroni penguin eggs! This week we checked two eggs that are further along to see if they were fertile, and we will check the other two eggs next week. The eggs you see in this video are fertile! Macaroni penguins have a vulnerable conservation status with decreasing populations, so this would be an exciting addition to the species. There is still some time to go to see if there will be chicks, but we will provide updates along the way!

Thank you, volunteers! We appreciate your work every single day! #NationalVolunteerWeek

Harbor!
Have you seen Harbor in our Aquarium? Harbor is an ambassador for our Sea Turtle Second Chance program! In 2016, she was hit by a boat propeller in a waterway in Florida and received extensive injuries. She has since recovered but has developed a condition recognized as bubble butt syndrome due to the air trapped under her shell. While she has adapted and thrived, she was deemed non-releasable and has lived in our Aquarium ever since! She can often be seen swimming or resting between rocks. Stop by to see her! We recently released six turtles back into the ocean last week. Check out our updates about the trip on our social media pages! This program is sponsored by Peoples Natural Gas.
