This amazing child is a author and illustrator! Join me in congratulating Dylan for his Sidniya & Clark book debut. Dylan has written a whopping THIRTY stories related to his original characters Sidniya & Clark. Over the past year, Dylan came every week to build confidence through writing class. Then two months ago, he said he was ready to pick two of his stories and publish them.
He rewrote the books on Canva, and we uploaded his illustrations to Canva. Today is his book release party and the kids are having A BLAST! He designed a treasure hunt, games, a set menu, and even a contract (swipe to see picture) of the appropriate attitude we need to have at this party.
We are so proud to celebrate kids like Dylan here at ! Have a happy weekend, everyone. 🌈
Also a special shoutout to Dylan’s parents for creating space for Dylan to be celebrated in such a special way.
Me: “You can sit wherever you want as long as you can focus. If you aren’t able to focus, may I pick your next stop?”
Student: “Yes, that’s fair.”
My last post was about putting kids’ needs before our personal preferences. Here is another example - flexible seating! Just because we prefer a spot for learning, doesn’t always mean our students would do well in that same spot. Every learner is different, and we have to give kids access to flexible seating so they can discover what works for them!
Give kids 2-3 options of where they can sit to do work, and let them choose. In doing so, you are giving kids autonomy and it proves to them “I respect your decisions.” Not to mention, you will get way less pushback when you need them to focus.
There’s been many times where I thought a student would work better at X spot. But if I made them sit there on day 1, they would’ve been defiant. So I let them pick their own spot while making the statement described above. Sometimes they proved me wrong. But other times, if I noticed they weren’t focusing, I could pick their next spot with very little pushback because we made an agreement. And then the next day, they would successfully pick a spot that would help them focus - often times the one I moved them to the day before.
What do you think about flexible seating? In what ways do you give kids autonomy in their learning day?
It’s only the first week of school and I already saw a thread where teachers are complaining about first graders humming in class 🤦🏻♀️, and how they’re rewarding kids for being silent all day. I also read another thread where kids were already required to prepare for beginning of the year testing. I realize the issues start from up top, and not necessarily the teachers. And sometimes things we would usually tolerate in a small group become very stressful when there’s 24 kids in a room. But I still don’t think it’s okay to project our stresses onto kids by asking them to be be silent all day, and jumping straight into test talk.
Have you noticed how much school benefits grown ups more than kids? Are we prioritizing our needs over our children’s needs?
Examples:
❗️The time school starts and ends feels like it benefits adult work hours. By the time school is over, kids are exhausted…perhaps it is too long?
❗️A curriculum might make teaching easier for adults, but it really doesn’t support kids of all learning needs.
❗️Behavior charts and reward systems make large classrooms more manageable, but can sometimes squash kids’ personalities. Are we raising happy kids this way?
❗️Classroom sizes are so big these days even though research shows small class sizes and one on one is most beneficial. So why do we keep doing it?
It often feels like we have convinced ourselves in schools that we are doing what is best for kids, but in reality, the decisions we make are what is better for adults. What do you think? Am I wrong in this perspective?
We have only one week left of our summer camp. It has been a blast celebrating everyone’s individuality through stories and art. The campers have been learning to be proud of their abilities, and value the abilities and differences of others. Thanks campers for such a special summer! 💗🌈
🔆 GUESS WHAT?! ALL 8 summer camp sessions are officially full! I am beyond thrilled to make books, art, and build confidence with your children this summer. Thank you for registering and let the enchanted countdown begin! ⏱️ See you in July! 🌈🍃🦄🐦🔥🐉🧙🏼♂️
While it’s officially Pride Month, we are so proud to celebrate kids’ identity every month at All the Write Colors!! I’ll never forget about ten years ago, having students I taught come to me to tell me they are transitioning, and realizing I had a lot to learn. I saw them sad, and I got calls that they were in the hospital due to self-harm. I never wanted to be the reason a child felt like they weren’t worth living.
One of my talented students, Mateo, created these amazing clay wizards representing different LGBTQ flags. Aren’t they amazing!? A few months ago, he wanted to explore the meaning of the different LGBTQ flags. So every week, we picked one and he made a clay wizard for it. Can you identify each flag?
We didn’t wait until Pride month to work on this. We started when he wanted to. And it wasn’t something I forced on him. My focus is to create a safe and welcoming space so that when kids are interested and ready, they have a safe place to start asking questions.
For that reason, cheers to a future where we love everyone regardless of their gender and identity today, this month, and every month!
Kids Ages 7-9! Two summer camp spots just opened up for week of JULY 8. Grab it before it’s gone! All other weeks for this age group are FULL. (I’ve got 3 spots left for ages 10-12.)

Summer Writing Camp - The Enchanted Story Cabin - Frisco Ages 7-12 Welcome to the happiest writing camp for creative kids! Come make magical stories, turn characters into art, and celebrate with an author party on Friday. Buy my new published book! Louisa Wedekind, one of our newest kid authors is here to tell you why you should buy her book. See video below! She worked on her book with me for six months as part of a writing club that met every Tuesday. She learned how to develop an exciting plot, organize it, format it, and write it in an engaging way. The book is 40 pages long with illustrations and words all designed by Louisa. Here at All the Write Colors, we are proud to coach kids like Louisa in becoming published authors and as a result, see their confidence grow.
As a side note, I have observed reluctant readers become super engaged in reading when the books are written by kids. One student said, “kid authors understand our humor so it’s more entertaining.” This summer, add books to your library that are written by kids! You can find all of our students’ published books on our website at allthwritecolors.com/bookshop. 📚
Have a beautiful Memorial Day weekend.
Lovingly, Katharine 💗
Be careful which reading resources you buy and download! See what I mean below. Kid Resources are not created equal. One of my new pet peeves is alphabet charts and alphabet cards that don’t introduce phonetic sounds correctly. It’s like there’s no thought being put into it to make sure kids can read. I work with a lot of kids in 2nd grade and up that are now struggling bc we introduced too many sounds at random when they were little. I have a free phonics and spelling sequence chart you can currently download on my website. And I’m working on a beginning reader/spelling set that includes what I think is missing from all of these literacy resources. Follow for new updates and stay tuned!!
PSA to families and teachers shopping for phonics resources online. There are thousands of resources online that do not support phonics development at all. Instead it can confuse kids or make them start guessing. Often times literacy activity sets are computer generated, or not strategically made to support phonics progression. It drives me nuts. Please be cautious before spending money on cutesy academic stuff online!
I loved my learning center but we outgrew it. Here is our new space! And hopefully this inspires you to examine and change what classrooms can look like in school for kids. A well-designed learning space can unlock the potential of many students.
If you look closely, you’ll see our walls are decorated with either books written and published by our students, their artwork, or books representing all the types of students we welcome at All the Write Colors.
To my students and families, thanks for being patient this past week. I can’t wait to see you and show you in person this week! 💕🌈

Do you teach a “wild child” or do you have a “wild child” at home you are worried about? We live in a society where being called a “wild child” is seen as a bad thing. And then we discipline them as if they need to be tamed.
Yes we can teach them boundaries and emotional regulation strategies, but these kids will grow up to be our future leaders. They are a gift to our world because they are curious, fun, and full of ideas!
We should embrace “wild child” kids with projects, play, creativity, and writing. This is our philosophy at All the Write Colors and it’s why we see so many kids blossom. We are embracing their curious personalities.
Do you think we could do better as a society in how we look at kids and their behaviors?

I want to show you what the journey is like in creative writing classes! 🚙🖍️
We help kids become authors by first adapting to their spelling level, learning style and their interests.
Throughout the whole journey they write their book while we praise them with strategic compliments. This leads to them loving the process and becoming proud of the book they publish.
By becoming an author, they learn that their ideas and opinions are valued! This is how we build confidence one book at a time!
Love, Katharine 💕

Two similar spelling rules are sometimes too confusing to teach at once. So instead, make a flip book to highlight just one spelling rule. ✨🚀
Fold a piece of cardstock and staple pieces of paper between it. Then write different word combinations and play!
I flip, you flip, we flip! 🌈
We believe in teaching out of the box, where we empower the gifts of each individual by working from creativity and empathy.
Enrich your universe,
With love, Katharine👩🏻💕 !

My first activity of 2024 is painting! I didn’t plan on painting today and when I tried to mix paints, I failed at the original plan. But, the “messed up” paint colors however, evolved into this fun silly painting. What an encouraging way to start the year. 🥰 Happy New Year! May your 2024 be full of creativity, fearlessness, and proud moments.
