It’s a pretty common misconception…

That when dogs jump on people, they do it for attention.

In fact, many trainers recommend turning your back on a jumping dog…

Remove the attention to “punish” the behavior.

But this approach often fails.

Because jumping is rarely about getting your attention so you’ll pet them.

Sure there are some dogs that do it so you’ll touch them. (My dog does this. But instead of jumping about wildly, which would be off putting for me, and would stop me from engaging, he jumps and gently stays put so that I’ll actually acknowledge him.)

But for most of the dogs who come to us for help with jumping…

This isn’t the goal.

Here’s the thing about dogs.

Body language is a big deal for them…

And most dogs don’t appreciate us looming over top of them and reaching for their head or face…

Something we commonly do when we say hello.

So some dogs get smart about their encounters.

They jump up wildly.

Which gets you to stand up and stop looming…

And they bounce around…

Making their head unavailable for your advances.

They don’t hate you.

But they are anticipating something a bit uncomfortable…

So they use their behavior to change yours.

And you know what?

It works.

Jumping stops that uncomfortable greeting they anticipate.

So they continue to do it with every person they meet.

Dogs may jump for other reasons too…

I have a client whose dog jumps when she’s scared…

And we have a dog in training who does it to stop you from putting a leash on her…

Because the leash stresses her out.

Some jump because they are anxious…

And others jump out of frustration…

And a LOT of the dogs we encounter jump as a way to say “No, Thank you” to whatever it is we are doing in that moment.

And check it out…

Every one of these dogs was mislabeled as “jumping for attention” by owners and trainers alike.

Listen…

While jumping can absolutely be about attention…

You’d be surprised at how uncommon it is in the grand scheme of things.

And getting to the bottom of WHY your dog jumps…

Is the most effective way to shift the behavior. 08/24/2022

Check out our guest Daisy! She definitely is picky with her people and it takes her time to warm up, so an at home environment is a perfect place for her to board while her family is on vacation. She gets to move at her own pace, she gets lots of b***y scratches, cuddles, and enjoys her walks. ❤️🐾🦮
