MAXliving Minute with Dr Rick Royston: HIIT has been around for several years and has proven to be extremely popular for a variety of reasons. It’s not only great for fat loss, but it also helps build strength and endurance. So what is this HIIT and why should you try high intensity interval training (HIIT)? HIIT workouts are best for people who don't want to spend hours in the gym but still want to reap the benefits of frequent exercise. HIIT workouts consist of short bursts of very high-intensity exercises – these bring the heart rate up to 90% of your max heart rate – followed by slightly longer 'rest' periods when your heart rate is brought down to 60-70%. HIIT workouts are fast, but it doesn't mean you should skip warm-up. Although you don't want to max out your heart rate warming up, you also don't want to go into a high-intensity training cold turkey either. Do some lunges or a couple of minutes of jump ropes to get your heart – and muscles – ready for the workout. The best part about HIIT is that it can be done at any time of day or night. It doesn’t matter if you have an early morning meeting or late night class, you can still do HIIT! You don’t need a gym membership either. All you really need is a pair of sneakers and a timer. To keep track of your heart rates during high intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts, you can use either a heart rate monitor or running watch.
