Happy Spring! Yesterday was the first official day of Spring. The transition into Spring is one of our favorites as there are so many new beginnings to look forward to. Even here in Florida, we can cherish this beautiful transition time.

Have you heard the term probate but never really understood what it means?


Probate is a court-supervised process for identifying and gathering a deceased person’s assets, paying any remaining debts of the decedent, and distributing those assets to his or her beneficiaries.

There are two types of probate administration under Florida law: formal administration and summary administration. But we’ll get to those another day!

For Black History Month, this week we are honoring Frederick Douglass.

Frederick Douglass was an American social reformer, writer, orator, and statesman. He escaped slavery in Maryland and went on to become a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York.

During his life, Frederick Douglass wrote three autobiographies describing his experiences as a slave. He was also the first African American nominated for Vice President of the United States.

Frederick Douglass believed in making alliances across ideological divides. He once famously said “I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong."

This week focus on being intentional. The thoughts we nurture are the thoughts that run our week. Make sure you focus on the things that will push you closer to your goals instead of distractions.

For Black History Month, this week, we are honoring Linda Brown Thompson. When Linda was in third grade, she and her family sought to enroll her in Sumner School in Topeka, Kansas. Her admission was denied on the basis of race. This denial lead to a lawsuit which ultimately resulted as the landmark 1951 United States civil rights case Brown v. Board of Education.

This SCOTUS decision was monumental because it overturned the precedent at the time. The “separate but equal” doctrine was the previous precedent which was established in Plessy v. Ferguson.

Linda went on to graduate from college and work in education. She remained a vocal civil rights activist throughout her life. She passed away on March 25, 2018 in her long time home of Topeka, Kansas.

We often see “do it yourself” online last will and testaments that don’t probate exactly how the creator thought they would. While online wills can be ok in very limited circumstances there are still a number of Florida pitfalls that websites don’t know to ward against. A will might not even be the right document to create for certain people and could cause you to go to probate when it could’ve been avoided entirely.

Of course, we recommend getting any estate planning documents done with an attorney. However, if that is not feasible, at least get an estate planning attorney’s recommendation on the documents you have created.
