Thank you to Detective Erik Longseth for coming and speaking at our February 27th meeting. It was interesting to hear about the local narcotics task force and to learn about all the things they do to try and combat drugs.
Thank you to Invesigator Tim Smith from the Madison Police Department for coming to talk at our February 13th meeting. It was great to hear about the Madison Police Department as well as a case study of a homicide that he worked.
On December 5th, we had our last meeting of the semester, featuring Officer Logan Hipps of Mequon. Logan is a former 4 year CJA member, with 2 years on the executive board. Logan talked to us about his experience in school, the police academy, and his field training. Thank you to Logan for coming and visiting us!
Thank you to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt Lurquin, and Sgt Schroeder for giving us a tour of the Dane County Jail facilities yesterday! We appreciated the opportunity to learn about the corrections system in Madison.
Thank you to Officer O’Connor from the Middleton Police Department for coming and speaking at our Oct. 24 meeting. We discussed an active shooter incident in 2018 which he was involved in, and also discussed how he dealt with the mental health issues that followed.
Thank you to detective Seeger from the Racine Police Department for coming and speaking at our Oct. 10th meeting. It was very interesting to see and hear about Racine and the U.S. Marshals Service. We learned about methods of executing search warrants, drugs, and stopping violent crime in Wisconsin.
Thank you to Officer Kinsella from Janesville Police Department for coming to our meeting and educating us on the K-9 unit and demonstrating how commands work.
Our last meeting of the spring 2023 semester featured Chief Hollinger and Sergeant Jobst from the Rockton Police Department. They were able to discuss the benefits that Rockton and small-town policing, in general, provide and how policing has changed throughout the past few decades, including technology and the use of force. We are thankful for them and everyone that has come to speak with us throughout this academic year. We appreciate all the information, advice, encouragement, and so on that you have provided to all of us!
Be sure to follow our social media pages for updates about next year's events. If you would like to speak to our group, please reach out, and we will put you on an email list that we will send information to once our meeting dates are scheduled. We appreciate everyone's support this year!
For our April 25th meeting, Special Agent Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) William Fulton, who works with the ATF, came and spoke to us. He was able to discuss his background, what the ATF does, and cases he has worked on or assisted with, including the firebombing of the City-County Building in Madison and the Chandler Halderson case. He was able to make the presentation very interactive as if we were the ones investigating the case based on the pictures that they had obtained from the incident. We would like to thank Special Agent William Fulton for traveling to Platteville and giving a very interactive presentation to our group!
Southwest Tech was generous enough to host our Criminal Justice Association last night and allow us to participate in a mini police academy. We were instructed in EVOC maneuvers, handguns, and rifles. We appreciate the time and effort that everyone at Southwest Tech put into organizing and running the event last night. It was super enjoyable being able to get hands-on experience with these skills!
We would like to thank Lieutenant Jennifer Seeger from the Janesville Police Department for speaking to us at our meeting last night! We were able to learn more about Janesville PD, the programs they have in the community, the programs available to officers in the department, her background, and various other information. We appreciate Lt. Seeger for coming and sharing that information with us!
If you or your department would like to come to speak to our group in the future, please DM us. We would love to have you!
We want to thank UW-Platteville Alumni Lieutenant Rick Fullmer of the Dubuque Police Department for coming and speaking to the Criminal Justice Association last night. Lt. Fullmer presented on a variety of topics but focused greatly on de-escalation and emotional intelligence, which are both very important in today’s world of policing. He was also able to relate how these topics play into various incidents that he has been on. We are very appreciative of Lt. Fullmer for taking time out of his night to come to speak to us and allow us to learn about these valuable topics. Thanks again, Lieutenant Fullmer!
