Sapphires can actually come in a rainbow of colors except for red. A red Sapphire would be classified as a Ruby.

Sapphires represent integrity, sincerity, nobility, and loyalty. Sapphires are thought to ease pain and reduce stress.

The most expensive Sapphire was a Kashmir Sapphire. It sold at $242,000 per carat at an auction in 2015.

In 1981 Lady Diana was given a 12 Carat Blue Sapphire engagement ring by Prince Charles. Prince William later gave this ring in 2010 to Catherine Middleton when he proposed.

The Blue Sapphire continues to be a rare and beautiful gemstone.

August’s birthstone is the peridot. Also known as the “evening emerald” for its light green color. Peridots are closely connected to the Hawaiian culture—they are thought to be the tears of the volcano goddess Pele.

Peridots are a light green, ancient, cosmic birthstone that has been found in volcanic lava in Hawaii, and in meteorites that have fallen to Earth. 

Generally a light green color, it’s a unique birthstone because it is always a shade of green and no other color. The intensity of color depends on the amount of iron; the more iron it contains, the deeper green it will be. 

A peridot’s bright green is associated with harmony, good health, restful sleep, and peacefulness.  Known as the stone of compassion, peridot calms anger by giving renewal to all things.

When set in gold, this gem was said to protect the wearer from nightmares. Supposedly, it frees the mind of envious thoughts that can damage and strain relationships. Also, peridot is believed to help depression.

The largest peridot ever found weighs 319 carats. You can see it in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

It's April, and we're showcasing this month's birthstone. A diamond is the hardest gemstone and is made of just one element, carbon. In order to cut a diamond a special steel plate is used that is covered with diamond dust and diamond oil.
