Clarkia looking mighty fine at golden hour 🤩
Clarkia is one of many spike-shaped flowers that I grow at Humming Harvest. Just like creating a well-balanced meal takes thought and planning, so does growing flowers for a beautiful mixed bouquet.
Each winter, I plan the field based on what ingredients I plan to tuck into bouquets, keeping in mind the important shape categories for each season. Even through this planning process, I inevitably buy more seeds than I would ever have space for. 🤦♀️ Anyway one else? Lol.
I’m excited to share some guiding principles that I use for making bouquets in my upcoming workshop at @revivalpnw on august 28th from 3-5pm. We’ll have sweet treats from @farmerrosiecafe and lots of fun together. Registration on my website (linked in bio) under the ‘events’ tab. Hope to see you there!

Public service announcement from Francesca: Goats love fig leaves. 🍁 🐐 Seriously, every morning this fall, the goats have run to the fig tree for snacks when we let them out. They scoop up leaves that are bigger than their heads and then proceed to slowly devour them. It looks ridiculous and every time they do it, it makes me laugh. I just had to share a clip of the shenanigans. Owning goats has been even more fun than I’d imagined. They make me laugh out loud every day, as they’re almost always doing something silly. From smooshing half their bodies under the fence to reach similar grass on the other side, to hopping around on their hind legs for no reason, they just encapsulate a simple way of being and it grounds me every time I spend time with them. Glad we took the leap and brought Peppers, Francesca and Chad to our farm. 🥰 . . . . #goats #babygoats #kitsapcounty #kitsap #pierce #piercecounty #portorchard #gigharbor #gigharborliving #pnwfarms #washingtonflowers #washingtongrown #pnwflowerfarmer #flowerfarmer #flowerfarm
Mesmerizing, eh? 💫 Every dahlia is unique and beautiful in its own right, but I think labrynth might just be becoming my favorite this season. Can you see why? 🤩 Over the years, the categories of dahlias (I.e. dinner plate, ball, decorative etc.) sort of confused me…I wasn’t sure which to consider for cut flowers and felt like the options were endless. How to choose what to grow?! Well, I still feel that way 🤷♀️, buuuuut I have learned so much and have gotten so many of my questions answered from @Floretflower’s “Discovering Dahlias” book. She covers everything from dahlia types, her top picks, how to grow them and even how to breed them to develop your own unique seeds. If you’re thinking of diving into the world of dahlias, this book won’t disappoint! Anybody else have recommendations for resources? I’m looking to bulk up my winter reading list 📚 . . . #discoveringdahlias #dahlias #labrynth #dahliasofinstagram #hummingharvest #growyourown #locallygrown #grownnotflown #summer #localflowers #buylocal #farmbeginnings #flowerfarm #flowers #KitsapCounty #PierceCounty #pnwfarms #washingtonflowers #washingtongrown #pnwflowerfarmer #portorchard #gigharbor
