How does Stomucin-u actually work to improve gastrointestinal health?

The scientific literature clearly supports Stomucin-U's, (i.e., Vitamin-U's), mechanism of action: The active, isolated component, S-Methylmethionine Sulfonium Chloride, or MMSC, when administered into the body, "signals" specific cells of the G I. tract to synthesize and release/secrete the natural mucopolysaccharide, Mucin, which lines and protects the entire G.I. tract.
This particular mucopolysaccharide is specific to the G.I. tract as it is produced by specific cells called Goblet and Columnar cells which line the epithelial surface of the esophagus, stomach, intestine, colon and lower bowel..... i.e., the entire gut.

Once the lining of the gastrointestinal tract is restored in this manner, it is now protected, discomfort is relieved, and this allows the tract to begin to heal properly and naturally....and very important is that the healthy secretion of stomach acid (HCl) can return to normal with little or no concurrent pain or subsequent damage.

The mucin protection acts like a bullet-proof vest as it coats the gastrointestinal tract and allows the natural acid to help digest food, allows for optimal absorption of nutrients, and to protect the immune system of the entire body.

Stomacin-U is very effective against a number of common ailments found in dogs, and is an excellent neutraceutical for combating acid reflux which is frequently found in canines.

Acid reflux is more frequently found in younger dogs, (who tend to be at higher risk for this), because their esophageal sphincters are still developing. Due to the pain associated with heartburn and gastric reflux, as well as to their associated health risks, whether they are indicators of underlying disease or just the primary problem itself, we have become reliant on prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications to combat the pain associated with these conditions.

Prescription and OTC medications can be placed into three categories; Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI), Histamine-2 Receptor Antagonists (also called H-2 blockers), and Antacids. All have one effect in common in that they function to reduce acidity in the stomach. Unfortunately this common action is the main culprit responsible for the accompanying side effects of each of these medications. They all reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Any shift or disruption of the stomach's natural acidic environment will change the way food and nutrients are utilized by the body. The important thing to remember here is that this same problem affects our pets as well, and in the case of dogs, even faster and many times more intense. Because our furry friends live their lives closer to the ground and are exposed even more to these negative factors, they are probably affected even more and these effects can be more devastating as well as lethal.

Let's look at the gastrointestinal tract similarities between man and (in this case), dogs. Although anatomically different in many ways, on the cellular level they are quite similar.

The surface of the of the gastrointestinal tract is lined with a mucous gel layer that functions as a protective barrier. This substance is called "mucin". Humans and animals possess this natural substance which is produced in various organs; most important for us here, the stomach and parts of the upper G.I. tract. Mucin protects these areas from the harmful effects of gastric acid and serves as a protective barrier. The conundrum here is that humans and animals must have this gastric acid (hydrochloric acid or HCl), to be produced and secreted for proper digestion and functioning of the gut. Thus, we must have adequate acid production but need to have a natural substance to protect against its corrosive and damaging effects on our own tissues..this is what mucin does.

Aging, disease, poor diet, genetics and environmental factors have specifically led to mucin deficiencies, leaving the gut unprotected and allowing stomach acid to pe*****te the lining of the stomach and upper gastrointestinal tract. This causes pain and tissue damage. One of the true epidemics affecting the gastrointestinal tract and the esophagus is GERD or Gastro- esophageal Reflux Disease.
This is when the acid (and even bile) refluxes or regurgitates up into the esophagus. Another system that virtually requires that mucin be present and functioning is the Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT) system. Because of it's
close contact with a large number of foreign antigens and mitogenic substances that reside in the lumen of the gut, in order to protect us against potential (or active) invasive pathogens and/or inappropriate immune responses to an enormous number of antigens, the intestinal mucosa has this specialized immune system (i.e., GALT).
Evidence points to the important synergy of the GALT system and it's protection by the mucin lining in the gut.

Malabsorption is a very serious issue in both humans and animals. With malabsorption, overtime, one may become deficient in protein, iron, various vitamins and minerals, and this in itself can lead to varying degrees of malnutrition as well as to anemia. Protein malabsorption and depletion can lead to muscle wasting, impaired bone formation and osteoporosis. Malabsorption of carbohydrates, fats, and protein will lead to a significant loss of calories, diarrhea, general malaise and overall fatigue.
