Denise Adán is an acupuncturist specializing in chronic pain conditions ranging from fibromyalgia to orthopedic injuries, digestive health, liver health and nervous system regulation.
I know a common response to acupuncture is that the needles can be off putting. We've all had painful jabs at the doctor and the idea of laying with needles might even seem dangerous to some. Those feelings towards needles are valid. Never ever try anything that doesn't call out to you but know this: treatments are catered to your level of comfort and not everyone benefits from 20+ needles in their back and neck as pictured here.
So here are some things to look for when establishing a relationship with an acupuncturist for the first time:
🔴 Get familiar with the styles of acupuncture your acupuncturist practices. Have them describe why and how they use those styles to treat your condition and when do they know to adjust what they are doing to get results.
🔴 Get clarification on how you should feel during and after the treatment.
🔴 Have them explain what sensations are appropriate and expected.
It's perfectly normal to express any concern you have about acupuncture needles. The first few sessions are often designed to figure out what the right dose of needles and which style of acupuncture is appropriate for you.
And just so you know, when resting on the table with needles many patients fall asleep from feeling deeply relaxed.
Hope this helps!

It feels so good to have the new clinic space set up!
There were many people who helped me through all the steps of moving and I want to thank you from the bottom.of my heart for your love and support. Y'all were taping, painting, cleaning, hauling my supplies, sharing meals, checking in, offering hugs and rooting me the entire way.
I can not thank you enough!
🏳️🌈 Happy gay pride everyone! 🏳️🌈
Bailey's got a special book recommendation for you to enjoy this month. Learn about the fluid spectrum of gender and sexuality through the lens of Chinese medicine.
This book is filled with wonderful information along with drawings that depict concepts beautifully. It's a fun read, you can bounce around the book to your favorite topics and personally it expanded my understanding of TCM theory as well.
Let us know if you check it out!
For some patients it's 5 needles and for others it's 30.

Shoulder Pain
Tightening tissues around the shoulder could cause a number of problems like wrist pain, swelling hands and shortness of breath to name a few. Pictured here are the red markings from a Gus Sha massage treatment. These markings are created from the intentional scraping of the shoulder area with a special tool. The location of red markings is understood to show us the area of restricted or knotted tissues, either fascia or muscle, that was broken up by the scraping therapy. Clinically I have found this to be so effective that patients often regain a portion of their lost range of motion in their first treatment along with pain relief.
Shoulder Pain
You know that deep achy spot that's hard to reach in the middle of your shoulder blade? It's ache feels exceptionally deep and if you could rip it out you would? I've known that specific type of shoulder pain personally and dreamed of someone shoving their finger in there to get that boring sensation out!
Acupuncture can get into the deepest part of that ache in a way massage can not. The needle bypasses the external tight muscles that wrap around the knot allowing us to treat the problem area directly without crushing the external tissues!
Pictured here is electro-acupuncture, where an electric current is run through the needles to contract and release the muscle repeatedly until it completely relaxes. I highly recommend this treatment! It was a game changer for me!

So what does cupping do?
Instead of pushing on your muscles as done in massage, cupping sucks them up into the bell of the glass cup. This suction stretches out the tissues versus compressing them, creating space between all the layers - skin, fascia and muscles!
Wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving as we gather with loved ones, give thanks for what we have and reflect on the Indigenous history of this holiday. I am so thankful for my animals, my mother, my friends and to be blessed with a meaningful job where I can connect with so many people. Thank you for trusting me with your stories, your life histories, your joys and tragedies. We are all living this life together, seeking balance, finding meaning and always healing and reinventing ourselves.
Have a blessed holiday everyone!

This past Monday I participated in the graduation of the 2023 DAOM class. There is still more work to be done before I officially receive the doctorate title but everyday I am closer to that goal. I am honored to have had the opportunity to study with many brilliant specialists in the Chinese medicine field.
