Just came across this photo of a little trick I thought of one day of the job. I cracked open a fresh can of red-lead substitute primer to paint out the inside face of a plank. When I noticed it hadn’t been stirred I thought, “really wish I didn’t have to mix this by hand right now!” But then I looked at the paint key in my hand and thought, “wait a minute. What if I…” The picture says the rest!
This is Mr. Snuffleupagus (responds well to Snuffy). He is my favorite 3 lb sledge hammer. Picture #3 shows Snuffy’s former 6” hex-shaped handle. I decided a while back to upgrade him to a 12” black locust handle with two grip positions and a purple heart wedge. This was a good opportunity to make this sledge more user friendly and to use my spokeshave on the shave horse. Last image shows Snuffy hard at work demoing rotten planking out of a 100 year old Lake Union motor vessel. More on that boat/job in a post coming soon…
Had a brass fastener break on me as I was installing teak trim around the new port light. I missed oversizing one of the holes in the acrylic and the #8 screw bound up quick and snapped. I used one of these handy little hollow, reverse drive screw extractors to get that little bu**er out. I also employed a little trick I just learned from to secure my alignment jig. I didn’t have any double stick tape with me on the boat, but I did have painter’s tape and CA super glue w/ accelerator. Worked great! Thanks for sharing Keith! Go check out his video post for a quick tutorial on this technique.
I was scrolling through old photos and came across this fun job I never got around to sharing. I got to finish off these kite winder stairs with , who originally built them and designed all the finish details. These stairs are bright, cvg fir treads, newel post, balusters and rails, with bamboo risers to compliment the flooring. Jeff also designed the underside storage area with a drawer bank, and a new home for his sweet little dog, Cleo, which I helped build! He made an awesome skirt to run along the stringer, but unfortunately I don’t have a picture of that to showcase.
A little side job for . Their fire extinguisher cases were accidentally installed a little to close to the floors, so they came up with this creative little idea to swap them out for some small inset shelves. I designed them to look like little window boxes with captured adjustable shelves, poplar casing, stools, & aprons.
