Did you know? Heavenly Falls was named as such because Professor Takuma Tono, the designer of the Garden, felt that it appeared to flow down from the Milky Way, known as the “River of Stars” in Japanese. 🌟 #portlandjapanesegarden #heavenlyfalls #strollingpondgarden

Sounds of nature in our Entry Garden 🌿 A water garden of cascading ponds welcomes visitors at the bottom of the hill. It is as if visitors were setting foot on land after a voyage across the Pacific from Japan or disembarking from the Willamette or Columbia River, which were the original highways of this region. The garden continues along a landscaped walk up a terraced stone pathway and through towering firs and big leaf maples growing naturally along the hillside in a lush native forest. Those familiar with Northwest Native plants might recognize species of trillium, bleeding heart, vanilla leaf, false Solomon seal, and wood strawberry along this path. Small trees and shrubs, like vine maples, salal, and huckleberries frame the view. The ancient trees growing from the fern and moss-covered slopes should quiet the mind and refresh the spirit as visitors continue their journey toward the Garden at the top of the hill. Water running down the hill is gathered into an ephemeral creek bed, full in winter and dry during summer. #portlandjapanesegarden #entrygarden #watergarden #northwest

Have you seen the new art exhibition in our Calvin and Mayho Tanabe Gallery? It is called Painting with Thread: The Art and Culture of Fukusa. Commemorating the recent donation of The Peter and Beverly Sinton Japanese Gift and Altar Cover Collection, this exhibition showcases the art of gift-giving through the beauty of fukusa. Fukusa are ornate textiles traditionally made of Japanese silk that were draped over formal gifts and presented amongst prominent families during the Edo period (1603 – 1868) through Taishō period (1912-1926) in Japan. A fukusa could be embellished through weaving, dyeing, painting and embroidery or sometimes a combination of techniques. The fukusa was often not part of the gift, but an important aspect of the gift-giving ritual and would be returned to the original owner often with a small reciprocal gift. Simplified versions of this practice remain in Japan today to commemorate weddings, births and funerals. Nature-inspired fukusa related to the plants and scenes familiar within Portland Japanese Garden are on display. The elaborate designs and materials used to create the fukusa also revealed a message filled with symbolism about the gift, gift-giver, and occasion to the recipient. These functional works of art embody a high level of technique and artistry in their designs. #portlandjapanesegarden #fukusa #Japaneseart

It’s time for some summer shopping! Behind the Shoji, our summer marketplace, is now open. For more than a decade, Behind the Shoji has been one of Portland Japanese Garden’s most anticipated summer traditions. An annual show and sale of Japanese and Japanese-inspired wares, visitors can peruse and purchase from a variety of curated items that, even with a trip to Japan, might be difficult to come across. What makes this elevated and distinctive shopping experience stand out is the amount of time that goes into establishing relationships with craftspeople and vendors in communities across Japan and the careful research into making sure visitors to the Garden are indeed perusing goods that are authentically Japanese in their makeup and design. #portlandjapanesegarden #behindtheshoji #japaneseart #japanesecrafts
