What's your favorite brewing method, and why? ☕🤔
We began working with Finca La Hilda of Costa Rica in 1998. From the start, our approach has been to listen to our coffee producers' needs and invest in projects that provide sustainable solutions. Each community has its own climate, resources, and culture. We have learned it is vital to have individualized plans for each farm to create meaningful, long-lasting impact.
Early on, La Hilda experienced a major logistical challenge as close to 600 coffee pickers and their families migrated to their farm during the harvest season without the proper infrastructure to support them. In 2004, we partnered with The Coffee Source to address the needs of our growers at Finca La Hilda. Together, we helped build a daycare where farm worker’s children are provided a safe, educational, and fun environment to learn and grow. They also receive healthy meals, medical check-ups, and of course, an annual holiday party.
Check out these photos of the daycare thriving in 2023!
This year, we're celebrating 28 years of doing good and making great coffee. We've included Costa Rica in our Anniversary Roast to pay homage to our long-lasting partnership that helps make this possible. 💛

One year ago, our hearts collectively sank as we learned that Jesse Clark, our Director of Coffee, had passed. He wasn't just a colleague; he was a mentor, friend, guiding light, and was intrinsic to building a collaborative and nurturing company culture. His enthusiasm for coffee, unwavering work ethic, and humility left an indelible mark on all of us.
On the first anniversary of his passing, we're honored to introduce Jesse’s Blend — a special, limited-release roast crafted in his memory. We hope this coffee is a fitting tribute to the person we all miss dearly, and we aim to help keep his memory alive with every brew.
Sourced and developed by our Roasting team, who worked closely with Jesse, this coffee contains both washed and naturally processed beans from Ethiopia and Colombia, in the spirit of the juicy and balanced blends Jesse enjoyed creating.
When brewed hot, the coffee is sweet and fruity with a chocolatey finish. When brewed as iced coffee, the blend has ample berry sweetness and citrus acidity, with a buttery and creamy mouthfeel – reminding us of lemon-blueberry muffins and blackberry cobbler.
$2 for every bag of Jesse's Blend will be donated to the Oregon Dog Rescue. Before his career in coffee, Jesse was a vet tech and cared deeply for his pets, and we want this coffee to benefit a cause close to his heart.
Pre-sale is available for purchase now at portlandcoffeeroasters.com. First roast and shipments for this limited coffee begin on 5/13/24.
When and where did you first try coffee?! 🤔☕👇
We’ve been buying coffee from La Hilda Estate in Costa Rica almost as long as we’ve existed. We support their community by funding a daycare and school for the La Hilda community, including internet access and computer classes.
Our Costa Rica coffee is available as a single origin, and is also featured in this year's Anniversary Roast blend.

Say HI to Kelsey Scott, our new Manager of Coffee Roasting & Quality, and she roasted the most coffee out of all our roasters last year!
Read her coffee journey below, which includes a touching tribute to Jesse Clark (RIP) as her roasting mentor.
My coffee journey started when I was 8 years old. My parents opened up 2 coffee shops in Tacoma, WA in the late 90s & early 00s. I was too young to officially work there at the time, but I did help my mom on the holidays & worked for free pastries, Irish cream steamers, & tips.
My folks transitioned into selling Sonofresco roasters, which are 1lb air roasters. They began a business selling them to smaller shops looking to save money on roasted coffee. I was a little older by then & was in charge of preparing green coffee to send to our customers who bought these roasters. We had 13 different blends, our main espresso blend being 5 different components!
We bought all of our green from The Green Room in Auburn, WA. I still remember my first trip to that huge warehouse. Double wide pallets stacked clear to the top of the ceiling. Millions upon millions of pounds of green coffee from different parts of the world. I was amazed.
After my parents sold the roaster business I took a hiatus from the coffee world, but I always managed to be a barista in a lot of my odd jobs throughout the years. Then in 2016, I moved to Portland & began working in production at PCR. Within a few months I was training to be a roaster, which was my original goal in applying, so I was stoked.
I learned everything I know about roasting from my supervisor Jesse Clark. I am still in shock that he is gone. I hope he is somewhere close helping me stick to the correct roasting curves and rate of rises, and also defending us against fires & machine malfunctions. I am glad Jesse took a chance on me to become a roaster. I lost count a while ago, but since being at PCR I have roasted millions of pounds of coffee.
It has been quite the coffee journey so far, & I hope to continue learning & growing in this really cool & unique career.
Favorite PCR coffees: Org Ethiopia or anything naturally processed
Machines: Ambex 2k, Topher 60k/120k, Diedrich 210k + Sample roaster
