🌟We’re so excited to introduce Amelia Barker, our new Home Gardens Program Leader!
Amelia brings an abundance of diverse experience and we are totally delighted to have her on board, and for you all to meet her!
Originally from New York, Amelia moved to Oregon in 2016 and has been farming ever since. She has worked on and managed farms from 16 acre mixed veggies to an intensive half acre of cut flowers.
Her love of plants also manifested at school educational gardens, a genomics lab at a botanical garden, a seed saving nonprofit in Bangalore, India, and flower shops across the country. When she’s not puttering in the garden, find Amelia working on a sewing project or exploring a new park with her daughter.
Today is our beloved last day with Portland Edible Gardens!!! 😭 Over the last 3+ years Pritha has been an absolutely crucial part of our small team, leading our Home Gardens Program and helping PEG grow and evolve in ways that never would have been possible or even imagined without her.
We appreciate Pritha for so many things: Her unshakeable level-headedness, her deep well of horticultural knowledge, her ninja-like spreadsheet skills, her wide and thoughtful perspective, and her warm presence in the gardens of so many of our customers, among so many other things.
Pritha has left an indelible mark on so many gardens and gardeners and on Portland Edible Gardens as a whole. Pritha, we’ll all miss you dearly! And we wish you the absolute best in your next chapter.
In gratitude, Ian and the PEG team ❤️

🫛Early February is a great time to plant peas! They grow well from seeds and unlike many vegetables, they have the ability to sprout in very cold soils.
We recommend covering your newly sown pea seeds with row covering or mulch to help them germinate and also to protect them from birds and squirrels. But don't forget to remove the covering once they have sprouted and are looking for sunlight!
Our favorite peas to plant in the late winter are sugar snap types, which are a favorite with everyone including the kids!
'Super Sugar Snap' is a tried and true variety in Oregon gardens. They have vigorous vines, are early fruiting, wildly productive, and esceptionally sweet. What's not to like?

The Hori Hori (literal translation "dig, dig" ) is a hand tool that has been used for centuries in Japan, and it's all the things we love in a tool: Ergonomic, lightweight, affordabe, durable, multi use, and attractive!
We love it for many reasons and find it to be much more useful than a traditional hand trowel for most uses in the vegetable garden. It can be used for digging, cuttting, w**ding, harvesting, transplanting, and spontaneous garden duels. It's slender blade and ergonomic feel make it easy to dig, cultivate and w**d.
There are many styles and models available, but our favorite, the wooden handled Nisaku brand is available for $20-$25 online. It will replace your old blunt trowel and you won't look back!
👀We see a lot of advertisements for low cost, out of the box raised garden beds. Pretty colors, "easy" setup, long lasting…
…So what's not to like? And why would you invest in handmade raised beds from PEG? 🤷🏼♂️
Where shall we begin?
Before any installation we start with an on-site in-person consultation with PEG Owner Ian Wilson to assess the potential of your property for growing raised garden beds.
During an Initial Consultation, we learn about your goals and hopes for your garden space, do a careful sun study to ensure adequate sunlight, establish a plan and thoughtful design for raised beds that will meet your needs.
We select and prepare all materials for installation at our wood shop and then install your raised beds on-site according the the plan with additional options like a drip irrigation system, custom bench tops, rodent protection barriers, and trellises for climbing vegetables,
We fill all of our raised beds with a 100% organic and totally magical soil blend that will ensure that with or without professional planting support, the things you plant in your garden will thrive for years to come!

Growing your own vegetables from seeds is too much fun! And it's not nearly as difficult as you might think. A great starting place is to sign up to receive seed catalogs (yes, like a real catalog made out of paper that you can hold in your hand).
Some of our favorite seed suppliers are:
: A beloved Oregon supplier with a huge inventory of high quality seeds. We buy most of our seeds here!
: Unmatched in terms of diversity + quality. This Maine based employee-owned seed supplier has tons of varieties that are well suited to northern latitudes like ours.
: Another amazing Oregon seed company and seed breeder with all certified organic offerings and tons of unique varieities. They have 57 varieites of lettuce (!) many of which you won't find anywhere else.
: A small Oregon seed company with exlcusively open pollinated organic seed varieites, most of which are grown on-site! If they don't grow it themselves, they say who did.
: If you're looking for a stunning and mouth watering seed catalog, make sure you get this one delivered to your door. Baker Creek specialized in rare and interesting heirloom varieities and showcases them beautifully catering to small growers and home gardeners. Enjoy!
