For those who oppose the Biden administration’s decision for the DoE to require standardized testing this year (particularly the 4 NYS Regents exams that will be required):
Please use this link to send the letter below to President Biden, if you have not sent a letter already.
https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/
I was disappointed and dismayed by your administration’s recent decision to require states to administer standardized educational tests this year. On substantive grounds, this makes little sense because it is highly unlikely the results will be valid during a pandemic. Many students will be unable to take the tests under “standard” conditions, thereby invalidating the results. Teachers and education professionals should be focused on supporting students to learn and not on the expense and logistics of test preparation and administration. The priority of the US Education Department should be funding schools so all schools can re-open safely.
Mr. President, while you were campaigning, you were directly asked what you thought about these tests. You unequivocally responded that you would end the requirement, and said to the person who asked the question that she was “preaching to the choir.”
Please stand by this statement and reverse this decision and reinstate the waivers for all states immediately so that these tests do not have to be administered during the worst public health crisis in 102 years.
Thank you for considering my thoughts

What have you learned since March 13?
“The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.”

Details from NYS were released today on what the cancelled Regents exams mean for your Grade 7-12 child who is enrolled or has been enrolled in an course culminating in a regents exam.
The short version:
Students who, during the June 2020 examination period would have taken one or more Regents examinations, will be EXEMPTED from passing the assessments in order to be issued a diploma. To qualify for the exemption, students must meet ONE of the following eligibility requirements:
*The student is currently enrolled in a course of study culminating in a Regents examination and will have earned credit in such course of study by the end of the 2019-20 school year; or
*The student is in grade 7, is enrolled in a course of study culminating in a Regents examination and will have passed such course of study by the end of the 2019-20 school year; or
*The student is currently enrolled in a course of study culminating in a Regents examination and has failed to earn credit by the end of the school year. Such student returns for summer instruction to make up the failed course and earn the course credit and is subsequently granted diploma credit in August 2020; or
*The student was previously enrolled in the course of study leading to an applicable Regents examination, has achieved course credit, and has not yet passed the associated Regents examination but intended to take the test in June 2020 to achieve a passing score.
August Regents exams will NOT be required of any student who was already enrolled in a course culminating in a regents exam

PAY WHAT YOU CAN, IF YOU CAN. As an update to our previous message, we have already been contacted by parents who are losing their jobs and are worried about how to pay for their children to continue their education. Please don't let money be a deterrent. If you and your child need help, let us know. We will make it work. FaceTime, Facebook Messenger, WhatsAPP, individual and group. We will make it work together.
As many of you have heard, the World Health Organization has declared a global pandemic and local agencies are encouraging social distancing to prevent the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19). Out of an abundance of caution, I will be moving to remote tutoring sessions for the foreseeable future. I am committed to keeping my students and their families safe and healthy during this uncertain time.
I have extensive experience with distance learning and online training and will continue to support your children to the best of my abilities.
Please let me know if you have any questions or if your children need any additional support during this season.
Thank you. Take good care.

In the season of giving, won't you consider giving the gift of life?
In February of 2005, my father was admitted to Vassar hospital. We all gathered around as we knew it was the end of his life. During his second day at the hospital, he received a blood transfusion. We all joked he must have gotten the blood of a twenty-year-old. He knew our names, he recognized us, and he was able to remember stories he had not remembered for years. Although my dad died the next day, that blood donor gave us one more day.
The only way that I know to say thank you to that donor, is to donate blood myself and to encourage others to do the same.
My family and I thank you for considering a donation
In an effort to encourage donors, I am offering 15% off all tutoring services for blood donors. Https://www.facebook.com/MakingSenseofCommonCore
