It’s August, Prairie Panthers! The countdown is officially on for the first day of school!
Take one thing off your plate before busy season sets in and go ahead and get signed up for Prairie PTA today!
The PTA is very active at Prairie, providing programming, classroom and building supplies, and serve as a support system for the school and teachers! We know they have needed it after the last few years! 💜
A favorite Prairie perk is the ability to connect with other families across the school. The school directory does just that! By registering your family on the directory, and entering each Prairie family member, you are providing a way for others to connect with you. In compliance with SMSD policies, we are unable to capture information based on what you’ve provided to the office --- this means if you do not self-register and opt-in EVERY YEAR, other parents and the PTA do not have a way to reach you! Registering is easy, free, and just takes a couple of minutes.
Click the link in our profile, get signed up today… and let’s get ready for an amazing school year! 🎈

Prairie Community: Please consider reaching out to our legislators and encouraging them to pass a CLEAN K-12 budget that fully funds our schools-see example email below!
OK FOLKS, THIS IS IT. Do you want to show appreciation for our teachers and support our kids? CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS THIS WEEK (sample wording below). The legislative session ends next week and they still haven't appropriated funds for the eduction budget.
Ask your legislators to pass a CLEAN K-12 budget that funds our schools at the levels required per the Gannon Supreme Court case. NO voucher mechanisms and NO shirking their duties by using one-time federal funds meant for COVID expenses, such as addressing learning loss.
Find your legislators' contact info at openstates.org.
EXAMPLE EMAIL (COPY & PASTE):
Subject: Fully Fund Public Schools
Message:
Dear Senator ________ & Representative _________,
As your constituent, I'm asking you to support the passage of a clean K-12 budget that fully funds our schools as required by the Gannon Supreme Court case. Please oppose any voucher type mechanisms that divert public tax dollars to private schools and attempts to use one-time federal COVID funds to replace state funds.
Stay the course for our kids and support the full funding of our schools.
Sincerely,
Your name and address

History of Prairie School
Prairie School District #44 was organized in 1865, and the first one-room schoolhouse was built in 1866 on two acres of land at the northwest corner of 63rd and Mission Road. The property was formerly owned by the Reverend Thomas Johnson, founder of the Shawnee Methodist Mission and Manual Labor School, and inherited by his son, Alexander S. Johnson. Johnson and his wife sold the land to T. A. Lewis, T. C. Porter and A. S. Johnson as District Board #44.
The school was large compared to others of its time, measuring 60 ft. long by 40 ft. wide. According to Edgar A. Porter, it was called the “Crooked School” because the building leaned slightly to the north. The building served two functions – school and church. The Westport Cumberland Presbyterian Church met here until the congregation rebuilt its church in Westport destroyed during the Civil War.
At first, the district encompassed the land from 47th Street to the present day 71st Street, State Line to Nall. In 1873, when 79 children were attending the school, the district was divided, the northern portion becoming District 92 (Shawnee Mission School). This district was later divided into the Roesland and Westwood View districts. Then in 1874, land was detached from the Corinth district and added to Prairie, making the new boundaries 59th Street to 75th Street, State Line to Nall, including a small area west of Nall. After these changes, the schoolhouse more easily accommodated the 38 children enrolled.
The school day ran from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm from Labor Day to the first of May. School was never dismissed because of bad weather. Once a year, 8th grade students had to take and pass the Common Exam if they wished to continue their education at one of the city high schools (Westport or Argentine).
