In recent years, there has been a surge of interest among Indigenous communities in on-site renewable energy as an alternative revenue source, as a means to sovereignty, and as part of a larger effort, to steward the land in a responsible way, in contrast to carbon emitting traditional sources of energy. Developers, attracted by abundant land in sun- and wind-heavy plains, are paying attention. Bob Blake is the owner of solar installation company Solar Bear and the head of the nonprofit community power development firm Native Sun. Blake is also a frequent advocate for clean energy in the media and a tribal citizen of the Red Lake Nation in Minnesota. INTERVIEW: Does Vineyard Wind's approval signal a true paradigm shift for U.S. offshore wind? 11 May 2021. That’s the day the U.S. Department of the Interior announced the long-awaited final approval of the Vineyard Wind 1 project, now officially on track to become the first large-scale offshore wind farm in the U.S. Approval of the 800 MW offshore wind project, to be built approximately 15 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard, has been touted as a watershed moment for the nation’s offshore wind sector, and the repositioning of the U.S. as a major player in the trillion-dollar global offshore industry. But can the momentum be sustained? “I think maybe it’s a little too early to tell whether this becomes the true paradigm shift, but I think the momentum that we’re seeing in the moment--and it really comes out of the change in administration and the focus that they've had on decarbonization--seems to me to be pretty sustained,” Joel Johnston, an attorney with Hall Estill, told NPM. NPM Interconnections U.S. Developer & Finance Panel
Join us for NPM’s inaugural U.S. Developer & Finance Panel where we will hear from leading experts in the renewable energy industry on project pipelines, sector trends, challenges and expectations for future growth as we move further into 2021. NPM Interconnections - Renewable Energy Professional Forum: U.S. Developer & Finance Panel June 8 11am EDT Virtual Event Overview According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, there are only nine years left to stop the worst consequences of a warming planet and its impacts. U.S. President Joe Biden has promised a historic public investment of $400 billion over 10 years in clean energy technologies and innovation. To put that into context, that investment in today’s dollars is twice the investment of the Apollo program that put a man on the moon. In other words, we’re on the cusp of a clean energy revolution. And as the pace of both public and private investment flowing into renewables increases, competition for project development and capital providing opportunities is also accelerating. How are the leading developers positioning themselves to take advantage of the anticipated growth? Which markets and sectors are they most focused on? What challenges do they face and how are their organizations positioning themselves to respond and succeed? Speakers: Johana Afenjar Senior Director Capital Markets, Clearway Energy Benjamin Baker Managing Director, Greenbacker Capital Joshua Rogol Chief Development Officer, Strata Clean Energy Candice Michalowicz Chief Operating Officer, EDPR NA DG Elana Knopp Senior Reporter, New Project Media Please visit the link below to join this virtual event: https://newprojectmedia.com/interconnections-event-info #virtualevent #renewableenergyprofessionals #forum #paneldiscussion #GoNPM

RFP INTERVIEW: NYSERDA CEO lays out highlights of New York’s largest land-based RFP With an eye on generating 70 percent of the state's electricity from renewable sources by 2030, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) recently issued its largest land-based solicitation to date, calling for approximately 4.5 million MWh of renewable electricity per year--enough to power nearly 600,000 homes. Eligible projects include Tier 1 renewable technologies that commenced operation after 1 January 2015, and that launch commercial operation by 30 November 2023, with the option to extend to 30 November 2026. NYSERDA expects to notify awarded developers in late 2021. Over the past five years, the state's Clean Energy Standard (CES) has spurred contracts with over 90 new large-scale, land-based renewable energy projects including solar farms, onshore wind farms, and hydroelectric facilities, some of which have been paired with energy storage. These projects have brought significant private investment, new jobs and economic development to local communities in more than 30 counties across New York.
