This past week the department received the Partner of the Year award given to us by the RI Association of Emergency Managers. This award was due to the work our members did in developing an Armed Aggressor Rescue Task Force Response Plan for the University of Rhode Island Campus and surrounding community. Interoperability is important in the Fire service but especially important in preparing for situations such as this, so we want to thank all of our mutual aid partners who helped us with designing this plan and participating in all of the trainings.

Rachel is a valued member of our OSA family and we are extremely proud of her. We are proud to support her efforts to mentor young women and their interests in the Fire Service.

This week, we are delighted to introduce Firefighter Rachel D’Ambrosio. A distinguished graduate of the Rhode Island State Municipal Fire Academy, Class 019, Rachel now brings two years of valuable experience to the Narragansett Fire Department and is a qualified Deckhand for our Marine Program. Hailing from Narragansett, Rachel is a proud graduate of Narragansett High School and a recipient of our Department’s esteemed scholarship in 2014.

Before joining the ranks of the Narragansett Fire Department, Rachel leveraged her Bachelor's degree in Social Work to serve vulnerable populations, including victims of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Trafficking, and Child Molestation. Her commitment to public service extends beyond firefighting as she currently serves as an integral member of the RI Special Olympics Medical Team.

Notably, Rachel has embarked on a significant initiative in collaboration with a fellow firefighter from a neighboring town: the establishment of a mentorship program. Designed to support aspiring female firefighters and provide guidance to newly recruited women in the field.

If you encounter Rachel in town, please make sure to wave and say “Hi”.

First, we would like to take a moment to remember our fallen brothers of that lost their lives in the cold storage fire of 1999. Today, in an effort to always continue learning and preparing ourselves for the many situations our firefighters and first responders may be called to, members of several Rhode Island departments attended RTF Class 23-011. These men and women now have the base knowledge and skills required to safely respond to what are called Active Shooter Hostile Event incidents (ASHER). Today’s training prepared firefighters and EMS professionals to use effective life-saving emergency medicine techniques outlined in the C-TECC standard which ensures expedient triage, treatment, and transport of victims of these events. We would like to thank our partner for allowing us to use another of their properties.
