My third martial arts teacher was Sifu Jody Hill. Growing up in Hilltop area of Tacoma, Sifu Hill fought many a street fight. As a kid he boxed Golden Gloves. Over the years Sifu Hill has employed his kung fu in many physical alterations with unsavory characters.
He spent his life studying and applying Wing Chun close combat and has 3 different lineages back to Ip Man. Learning technical Wing Chun from him brought my Wing Chun and overall fighting skills to new levels. He taught me many good things - one was that sparring is NOT the same as real combatives and not the same as street fighting. While sparring has itās value so does understanding real self protection and self defense - sport combat is not at all the same as the nasty close combat found within WC. Wing Chun, done properly, is brutal on the assailantās anatomy. Even though the school is closed Iām proud to be one of only two active sifus keeping Hill Wing Chun methods alive.

Did you know most men suffer with Dunning Kruger effect in regards to their assumed fighting abilities? This is a fact. Most men greatly overestimate their fighting skills while many women underestimate their skills. š
If the subject is life saving self defense there are great things I could teach you in just a couple of hours. If weāre describing fighting more than one opponent though and time dragging on or long rounds are involved then more nuanced training is required (especially to avoid the DK effect that so easily besets most men). My second teacher was Sifu Cliff Lenderman. At Lendermanās Academy of martial arts in Tacoma I learned a blended system of Jeet Kune Do, Silat, and Kali (as taught to him from the legend, Dan Inosanto!) and Wing Chun (as taught to him from Francis Fong) Muay Thai, BJJ, Shooto, and Kickboxing! I would spar and work techniques on moving, unwilling opponents each week. Sifu Lenderman was the real deal he was around when guys like Ed Parker and Inosanto were first blending different styles. Looking back if I wasnāt able to spar and figure out what worked and what didnāt for years I wouldnāt be the artist/fighter I am today. Happy semi-retirement Sifu Lenderman.
