For those of you who have read "The Perfect Ending" (and those who have not... yet), does this video intrigue you or do you feel it needs more?
Follow the question mark to the next post...
Hi All!
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU...
The #1 rule I learned when first starting out as an author was:
DO NOT respond to negative comments/reviews.
I have followed that rule since day one. The only problem is,
there are questions I’d love to ask, but never get the chance.
I’m hoping you can help.
My books are psychological thrillers. For most readers, that translates into: suspense, sadness, heightened emotions, unlikable characters, discomfort and, oftentimes, shock.
Yet, I frequently receive emails, posts (and low ratings) protesting:
Unlikable characters — who I’ve intentionally created to be unlikable.
Uncomfortable situations — that I’ve deliberately written to cause discomfort.
Sad endings — that are purposely designed to make one yell, cry, or cringe.
Shocking twists — that the reader wished had gone another way.
My question is (I know...finally, right?):
Do you need to like the lead character in a book in order to enjoy the story?
If you think about my books (and other authors you’ve read), can you remember which ones you enjoyed the LEAST?
Did they have a main character you didn’t like? Did that unlikable character, though created to be unlikable, stop you from finishing the book? Lead to a lower rating? Make the story less enjoyable?
Or did the unlikable character help you enjoy the book more?
I’m not saying I’d change the way I write (I don’t have control
over my creative thoughts… they have a mind of their own), I’m just curious as to the impact the likability of a character has on a reader’s perception of a book.
Thank you in advance for any and all insight!
And, as always, thank you for reading my work.
Rob
