Fire cupping has been used thousands of years and is one of the most traditional form of therapy in Chinese medicine used alone or with acupuncture. A flammable fire is lit and placed in a glass cup. This creates negative pressure and is placed on the skin (no fire is in the cup by the time it is placed on the skin) creating a suction. Best way to describe it is an inverse massage as it pulls from the fascia encouraging blood flow, increased circulation, promote healing and reduce pain. Cups are left on for a period of time and may also be moved in a sliding motion around the affected area. Licensed acupuncturist utilizes cupping therapy for musculoskeletal injuries, boost immunity, certain colds and coughs (especially with phlegm), certain digestive issues, headaches/migraines, and stress by activating the parasympathetic system. Marks left will vary individually but it will fade within a week. If you love deep tissue massages, you’ll most likely love cupping therapy. It is fairly safe for most people but is contradictory for pregnancy, weak and elderly- just name a few. DM for any questions and to see if cupping therapy is right for you.
