The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 initially placed the Lakota on a single large reservation across multiple states. After the Indian Wars of the 1870s, the U.S. government broke this into smaller reservations, reducing their land and resources. This unjust move serves as a reminder of the Sioux people's enduring resilience and strength in preserving their culture and heritage.
Moving forward while looking back: Embracing our roots and beliefs guides us as we navigate the future. By understanding our heritage, we honor our past and build a stronger tomorrow.
At NAHA, our work is more than just a job. It's a commitment to uplifting the Sioux Tribe and making a positive impact. We're proud to be part of this incredible mission!

Prior to living in South Dakota, the Sioux Tribe lived in the Black Hills Forest, a region central to their cultural and spiritual identity. Following the Great Sioux War of 1876, they were forcibly moved to South Dakota. This tragic event was part of the broader U.S. government's campaign to open Native lands to settlers and miners. We remember their history and honor their resilience.
