They are called Joro Spiders.

They are a member of the Orb Weaver family of spiders which means they spin magnificent webs! These guys create beautiful golden spider webs. Orb weavers are also commonly found here in the Northwest.

With all members of the orb weaver family, you are safe. While they are venomous to insects, their mandibles aren't big enough to cause injury. If you were to be bit, it would be comparable to a bee sting. Birds and lizards love them as snacks! They also don't fly. They are parachuting, as most spiders are. This essentially means they bungee jump using their own silk cord and use the wind to carry them.

The Joro spiders aren't new here in the US. Since first appearing in about 2014, the Joro spider appears to have become established in north-central and northeast Georgia, with a presence in neighboring areas of Tennessee and South Carolina. They have been spotted between Forsyth, Ga., and Baltimore, with an anomalous sighting in Oklahoma in 2021.

No need to kill them...There is no evidence suggesting that they've caused any disruption to native ecosystems of the Southeast, where they have been most prevalent. They are just your friendly pest controlling artist neighbor.

These are the people who make things happen in our neck of the woods. I appreciate your talent and support, and your contributions to Shingletown.
I am proud to belong to this wonderful community. I hope to see all of my neighbors at our community events, where I also expect to see all of the wonderful volunteers that make this community a special place to live. God Bless Shingletown!

Driving Down This Haunted Northern California Road May Give You Nightmares Because Northern California's history is often a little unsettling, it's no surprise that some of our old roads and towns are haunted.

The snow is melting and the bears are a-waking.

The only bears found in Lassen are American black bears (Ursus americanus). Their fur can range in color from cinnamon brown, blonde, and black. While encounters with black bears are rare, they are wild animals. Never approach a bear. Bear spray is not permitted in the park. The raindrops on the leaves of this Christmas Berry, or Toyon, attest to the fact that it's wet here in the park, the skies providing its life-giving rain. We've received four inches of precipitation at park headquarters since Sunday evening.

The Jefferson Pipe Band family (minus our snares who have home work and some pipers) celebrates after its last practice of the year, a tradition that allows each member to have band-free time with their families during the holiday season. It has been a good year.

The Eagleville Saloon is progressing, thanks for all the support! We will open sometime next year.

We're less than a week away from the annual Tree Lighting in Downtown Redding with Viva Downtown! It's happening Friday, December 1st, during First Fridays in Downtown Redding! Come for the lights from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and stay to enjoy the First Friday festivities and support Downtown businesses!

We’re getting Santa’s Workshop ready, December is a busy month! From 11-3 on Sat the 2nd Kids Crafts will take place inside the B and B, along with a few vendors for your holiday shopping. My Bakery will be open and Fall River Coffee Co will be on-site serving warm beverages. Saturday the 9th stop in and visit us as part of the Inn Keepers tour. Saturday the 9th include us on your route as you navigate thru McCloud for the Innkeepers Tour, 11-4. The Bakery will be open and you can continue your holiday shopping with local vendors on site.
Saturday and Sunday, the 15th and 16th were hosting our 3rd annual Character Brunch, seating by reservation only…. There’s a few spots left 530-964-2130.

Shasta State Historic Park. 's Annual Old Time Holiday event is back! The event will be on December 2nd from 11 am to 3 pm. Engaging arts and crafts activities will be available for people of all ages!
