Why do fish returns in 2D sonar look different from fish returns in Down Imaging?
It’s all about beam shape.
The 2D sonar beam is shaped like an upside down ice cream cone. It is narrow at the surface and expands in a roughly circular shape as it travels deeper. Anytime a fish is anywhere in that cone shaped beam, it will reflect a portion of that beam back to the transducer and we see that fish in the 2D sonar view - like the two fish we see in the upper half of this image.
Fish in 2D sonar look like arches because the distance from the transducer to the fish changes as the fish passes through the wide, cone-shaped beam. When it enters and leaves the beam, its distance to the transducer is longer than when the fish is in the center of the beam - that’s why it looks like an arch. The true depth of the fish (assuming it passes directly beneath the transducer) is the top of the arch.
Fish in Down Imaging don’t look like arches; instead, they look like small bright spots. That’s because the Down Imaging beam isn’t cone-shaped. Instead, it looks like a thin triangle. It is narrow at the top and wide at the bottom, but very thin from front to back - about the thickness of a few slices of bread piled on top of each other. Because the beam is very thin from front to back, fish spend much less time in the beam and the distance from the fish to the transducer is functionally the same all the time - so we get a small bright spot instead of an arch.
The down imaging returns from the two fish in this view are easy to spot, and notice how they correlate perfectly with the arches in the 2D sonar view. Same two fish, same positions in the water column, but interrogated with two different sonar beams - with different frequencies and beam shapes - so we get different looking sonar returns.

Understanding how a vessel's navigation lights are configured makes all the difference between safe operation and a dangerous situation at night.
Two important things to consider:
1) White light is visible from 360 degrees around a power-driven vessel at night.
2) Both the red and green sidelights are only visible together when looking at another vessel from head-on.
Therefore:
1) If you see the white and green navigation lights of another power-driven vessel ahead, then you are looking at their starboard side. You have the right-of-way, they must give way (green means go).
2) If you see the white and red navigation lights of another power-driven vessel ahead, then you are looking at their port side. You must give way, they have the right-of-way (red means stop).
3) If you see BOTH red and green sidelights and a white light, then you are looking at another vessel head-on. Generally, alter course to the starboard and pass port to port.
4) If you see ONLY a white light, then you are either staring at the stern of another vessel or at a vessel at anchor. Handle either situation the same way and give way.
Let us know if you enjoy seeing these informational safety-related posts. Even though we cover all of this information and more in our classes, it is important that EVERYBODY on the water stays informed and knowledgable about the rules and regulations.

I would like to welcome Kevin Langlands as a new advisor for the Eastside Elites. Kevin was with the club in year one and fished until he graduated from Dakota High School with many other Elites. He then went to Grand Valley State University where he joined their fishing club and took home the state championship on Lake St Clair in 2022. Kevin has always had a deep passion for fishing and I’m now fishing with him or against him in tournaments which is pretty cool to be a part of. I want to say thank you to Kevin for helping us out as we dive into 2023!

Boaters beware!! A recent authorization allowing the summer sale of gasoline containing 15% ethanol (E15) at roadside gas stations presents a problem for boaters. This type of fuel is federally prohibited for recreational vessel use, causes marine engine damage, and will void marine engine warranty. Additionally, E15 fuel has been shown to make engines run hotter, increasing the potential of a catastrophic boat fire. Signs or warning labels may not be obvious at the pump as it may simply be marked as “regular 88” or “regular unleaded”. The convenience of filling a tow vehicle and boat at the same time may cause boaters to overlook this potentially dangerous detail. Please ensure the fuel you are dispensing into your boat contains no more than 10% ethanol (E10).
We are looking for a high school angler that has been asking about an available teammate to pair with. I can’t find any messages regarding our conversations. Please message us if you’re still looking to fish in 2022
