What is a chip brush? A chip brush is an inexpensive brush made from natural or fabricated bristles. They are used for products such as varnishes, sealers, stain, epoxy, glue, paint thinner and the like.

A book contains 25 leaves, a pack contains 20 books, equaling 500 leaves. Each pack of 500 leaves covers a surface area of 39.50 sq.ft (approximately 3.7m.) without waste or overlap.

A gilder can determine the percentage of waste based on the complexity of the object and his or her own expertise in laying leaf. If for example, the surface is very ornate with deep crevices, it will require more leaf than the same size area of a flat surface.

Gum ammoniac is a natural gum size, or "mordant," harvested from dried tree sap that has been processed and dried. It is dissolved in water to make a sizing for gold leaf.

Gilders throughout history have often depended upon plant gums and resins for use as binders in gilding including gum ammoniac, glair, gum arabic, propolis, and garlic juice (Ilinocopia). They are historically used in ancient manuscript illumination and sacred objects.

Mordant Gilding is a term used in gilding that relates to the use of an adhesive medium for attaching the leaf to a base substrate. There are various mordants that can be used in gilding, although oil size for Oil Gilding and water based adhesives (white acrylic emulsions) for Water Based Gilding are two of the more popular mediums in contemporary gilding.

Fun Fact: The term mordant comes from the Latin mordere, "to bite," since the treatment was considered as "biting into" the base substrate for its hold.

🤩 🙌✨ of magnificent gilding by AT&T’s Golden Boy, gilded in 2020 in Dallas Texas with Marc Roussel of Roussel Studios. Originally named the Spirit of Electricity, sculpted by Evelyn Beatrice Longman in 1915. Its first location was on the top of 195 Broadway in downtown NYC. It was moved in 1983 to the lobby of Phillip Johnson’s AT&T building. The third location was in Bedminster NJ , where I first gilded it in 1991 , while working for Christine Roussel Inc. The sculpture is cast bronze 24 feet tall weighing 16 tons. Gilding a sculpture of this scale requires gilding in sections in 7 different sessions. We used Lefranc 12 hour oil size , and 23.75 karat loose leaf over a newly primed surface.

The resulting design pattern adds a kaleidoscopic vibrancy to the leaf. Tamper tools are often handmade with velvet rounds attached to a base handle or modified drill attachments.
