Bats belong to the order Chiroptera, which is second only to order Rodentia (the rodent order) in number of species. If bats and rodents were classified together, they would make up about half of all mammal species!

Picture yourself boating on one of Virginia’s many scenic and history-rich rivers or lakes. You’re enjoying a beautiful day with your family as you bask in the sun. After some time at anchor, you decide it’s time to head back to the boat ramp and real life. As you turn the key in the ignition, you’re welcomed with the unnerving sound of a mechanical failure and the panic sets in...

Watch Us, Don't Catch Us!
As our synchronous firefly season is coming to an end at Congaree, remember to be a good steward for the fireflies in your own backyard. There are an estimated 2,000 species of fireflies around the world, and they are found on every continent except Antarctica, so there is a good chance you have a population near you.
Fireflies often bring up childhood memories; spring is turning into summer and in the south, warm, moist evenings mean it's time to gaze at fireflies.
This time of year, we often hear folks say: "I used to see them in my backyard as a kid, we would go around collecting them in jars, and sadly I don't see many in my neighborhood anymore."
Cultures around the world have taken part in harvesting fireflies for many reasons: to give away as wedding gifts, to be released for public displays and to harvest their light producing enzyme. Well, unfortunately collecting and harvesting fireflies has led to some firefly species becoming nearly extinct.
The firefly population at Congaree has a safe place to thrive and survive, but on land that isn't protected, habitat destruction, pesticide use, light pollution, and mass harvesting is causing their population to decline. Thankfully just by turning out your porch lights, not using pesticides and leaving fireflies be, you can begin to make your home a safe habitat for fireflies.
This firefly season, no matter where you are, learn about your local fireflies, and help preserve the jewels of your night sky.
Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢
Let's shell out some love today and help conserve and protect turtle and other wild animals. Here are a few of our favorite ways below.
🐢 Don’t take them home. Leave wild turtles in the wild
🐢 Don’t relocate turtles. If safe, move it off the road in the direction it’s moving
🐢 Create turtle friendly habitats on your personal property or business
🐢 Avoid mowing tall grass during the active period for turtles
🐢 Avoid burning long-standing brush piles during the winter
🐢 Educate yourself and others about turtles
🐢 DO NOT RELEASE PET TURTLES (or any other species of pet)
