🛳️🍹💀 NAVY GROG 💀🍹🛳️

It’s time for another featured drink of the week! The origins of the grog can be traced back to a drink made with water and rum, which was introduced into the Royal Navy by British Vice Admiral Edward Vernon on August 21, 1740. Vernon himself had been nicknamed "Old Grog" because of a grogram cloak he wore 🧙🏼‍♂️, and the nickname became attached to the drink. Over time recipes evolved and once it got into the hands of tiki pioneer Donn Beach, his Navy Grog cocktail seems an ocean away. Combining three different rums with citrus juices and honey, this drink demonstrates how well different rums can blend together into something greater than the sum of their parts. Fun facts. The Navy Grog was one of former president Richard Nixon’s favorite drinks and he would sneak off in DC to enjoy a few. Also reportedly, Phil Spector consumed at least two Navy Grogs at the Beverly Hilton restaurant the night he later killed actress Lana Clarkson. Don’t be that guy.

🌫️😶‍🌫️FOG CUTTER😶‍🌫️🌫️

It’s that time again for the featured drink of the week! Originally created around WWll by Trader Vic, this potent cocktail is a blend of rums, brandy, gin, sherry, citrus, and a touch of almond. Some people even jokingly refer to it as the “Long Island Iced Tea” of tiki cocktails. Undoubtedly strong but undeniably delicious. Have one to clear the fog, have two and you might not even see it.

🧟 THE ZOMBIE 🧟‍♀️

Next up and seasonally appropriate, the almighty Zombie! 🧟‍♀️ Often imitated but never duplicated, this drink was created in 1934 by Donn Beach supposedly to help a hung over customer get through a business meeting. The Zombie combines three different rums, citrus juices, cinnamon, falernum, grenadine, bitters, and absinthe. This cocktail packs a punch with 4 ounces of rum (one of those being overproof), Donn’s restaurants limited its customers to two max because of their potency which he said could make one like “the walking dead”.

🏝️Featured Drink of the Week🏝️

Next up for this week, the Singapore Sling! Not an exotic cocktail by definition, the Singapore Sling is a perfect example of the kind of drinks that came from outside the world of tiki establishments and took up residence on tiki menus everywhere. Trader Vic first put this on his menu under the section “Drinks I have gathered from the four corners of the globe”. There is a lot of controversy about what actually goes in the drink but a few things we know for sure is that it was created by Ngiam Tang Boon at The Raffles Hotel in Singapore sometime around 1915. There have been a ton of variations over the decades, but this is the version we love best. Tall and refreshing gin based cocktail with lemon, Benedictine (French herbal liqueur), Cherry Heering (cherry liqueur from Copenhagen) and a splash of soda water. Dive in! 🍹

“The most delightful form of anesthesia given out today” is what Trader Vic said about the drink of the week, the Queen’s Park Swizzle. Pretty cool if you ask me. You can draw comparisons to the daiquiri and the mojito, but this blend of rum, lime, sugar, mint and bitters stands on its own, and comes to us all the way from the Long Bar at the Queen’s Park Hotel in Trinidad. As always, $12 most of the time, $10 during happy hour!

Three Dots and a Dash is the name of the game for the Drink of the Week. During WWII, Donn Beach created this stunning drink as a nod to victory, named for the Morse code for that very word. This drink blends aged Guyanese and grassy aged rhum agricole with orange juice, lime, honey, allspice and falernum, and boy lemme tell you what - this drink should have been called the Hand, because it freaking slaps, y’all.

👨🏻‍⚕️Doctor Funk is in the building!

That’s right, on this installment of ye olde Emerald Lounge’s Drink of the Week, the doctor is in! Who’s the doctor they told you to go see? Y’all better listen up closely. This light and bright stunner is a blend of rum, absinthe, grenadine, lime and touch of fizzy water and comes to us from the man himself, Don the Beachcomber. But it doesn’t start there, because he named it after Bernard Funk, a German physician living in Samoa, who was Robert Louis Stevenson’s doctor and liked to prescribe folks a kind of absinthe limeade for whatever ailed them. Maybe we’re doctors too? Come get your meds all week where this delectable drink is $12 normally and $10 during happy hour. The ice is free 😉

🐍COBRA’S FANG🐍
All aboard this week’s featured drink rail car on the express train to flavortown! This incredible drink created by Donn the Beachcomber in 1937 combines overproof rum, falernum, passionfruit, orange and lime with a touch of bitters and absinthe to create a balance of fruit, spice and intrigue. Devoted fans of the drink call themselves “Fang Bangers” but the truth is, we might all be Fang Bangers if you think about it. 12 bucks most of the time, 10 bucks during happy hour, every day!

Oh Frozen Negroni, your brief stint in our frozen drink machine was far too brief. You really were quite stunning. For anyone within the sound of my voice, TONIGHT IS THE LAST NIGHT TO GET A FROZEN NEGRONI AT EMERALD LOUNGE (and maybe you should mix it 50/50 with the pina colada if you really wanna take it to the next level 🫡).

🪐 The Saturn 🪐
This week we are featuring one of our favorite tiki classics, and one of the most famous gin drinks in this hemisphere, The Saturn!

This beauty boasts a delicious blend of London dry gin, orgeat, passionfruit, falernum and lemon and was created by Joseph “Po Po” Galsini all the way back in 1967 when he presented this recipe and won the International Bar Association World Cocktail Competition. Small wonder, this drink is complex and approachable, and ticks every box that a tiki drink should. Additionally, this drink is the inspiration for the Drops of Jupiter that we have on our regular menu, so feel free to compare and contrast!

We’ve got one of our all time faves in the happy hour tonight and tomorrow, so if you’ve been wanting an excuse to visit, a super delicious and interesting $5 daiq should do it. 5-7pm only!

Ten to One rum is a blend of Dominican Republic and Jamaican rum and is an incredible balance of what makes those rums special. It’s also co owned by which is pretty cool in my opinion if you ask me.

Last week when we dropped the menu, we also introduced a new permanent menu addition, the DRINK OF THE WEEK!

Every week we will feature a new drink, something classic or canon and it will always be $12, except during happy hour when it’s only $10!

To kick things off we are taking it back to the very beginning. The drink that may very well be the origin point for the entire tiki movement 🍹, the Planters Punch! This drink was beloved throughout the Caribbean but really found its home in Jamaica. It’s amazing in its simplicity, combining a rather powerful dose of Jamaican dark rum, lime, sugar and bitters. We can’t wait to make one for you!
