Monday’s free tech tip:”How Smart Your TV Can Be!” with YouGotHelp:

So what is a Smart TV? With how “smart” everything is, from phones to refrigerators and even toasters (yes, $350 toasters with a screen!), we can often be left feeling overwhelmed and not so smart ourselves.

Here to help demystify technology like this, today YouGotHelp briefly presents 1.) How a Smart TV works and 2.) Popular products in this category.

1.) Smart TVs are essentially ones that display content streamed digitally from the internet. Unlike traditional cable that has to be delivered from a provider through your neighborhood or satellite through your walls, into your living room and into a video box, modern streaming is done over Wi-Fi.

As a result, your access can include movies, shows, YouTube, and even regular channels all on demand! This is where you access platforms like Netflix and Hulu.

To deliver such content, your streaming hardware can either be built into your TV from the factory (officially marketed as a Smart TV and requires no extra accessories) or sold separately as something you can plug into your existing regular TV.

2.) Popular streaming devices include Amazon Firestick, Roku and Apple TV boxes, or Google Chromecast plugs. These devices can be powered via a wall socket or USB, connect to your Wi-Fi, and then feed display to your screen.

So you buy the streaming device, set it up, and sometimes pay a monthly subscription for access.

There are many more detailed reviews comparing each streaming device by price, features, and ease of use. While we won’t get into this today, a good rule of thumb is to expect to pay up-front about $30 or so dollars for the basic stuff, and more than $100 for the premium Apple stuff. Additionally, most devices and their streaming capabilities can be controlled by corresponding apps on your smartphone.

If you have a struggle with your existing Smart TV, or want to enhance your home entertainment experience by upgrading from your regular set, comment below right on this post today! Thanks for reading!

Loftmat USA - The Cushioned Mouse Pad Gen2, Ergonomic Wrist Rest Support, Pillow Comfort, Pressure Relieving, Performance Surface, Stitched Edges - (11.5 x 8.5in) The Office Executive, Version 2 07/21/2023

Welcome to Thursday’s “PC Parts and Picks” with YouGotHelp!

Today’s pick is a topic close to my own heart, as it deals with computer usage comfort and ergonomics. If you suffer from wrist discomfort while using a mouse, be sure to read on!

At my own office desk, I frequently experienced pain on my wrist where I rest my hand to use the mouse. After hours of being in the same position, a pressure sore can begin to develop, due to compression of skin, blood vessels, muscles and nerves against the bone in a single spot. Depending on your desk set up, it may be the case that your elbow doesn’t have anywhere to rest, and so the weight of your entire arm is held up by this one spot. Ouch!

Many mousepads serve only the function of providing a flat and smooth surface. This ensures the mouse works, but does nothing for the benefit of one’s hand.

Cushioned mousepads contain a raised and squishy material inside, often around the wrist area. This spreads the pressure more evenly around the larger base area of your hand, reducing the severity and likelihood of developing a pressure sore.

Not all cushioned wristpads are up to the task however. Especially when you are shopping online, it can be difficult to judge purely from the pictures and reviews if the product will truly feel as comfortable as you expect.

From personal experience, many wrist pads are made from cheap material, both with the outside lining that will fray and separate, and on the inside cushion that degrades and breaks down.

While these will last you a short period, it can be frustrating to be stuck with a product that is falling apart.

Once I found a high-quality cushioned mousepad that really supported my wrist and had a construction that withstood daily usage, I have relied on it since to help get me through my workday comfortably. It is a great benefit to be able to focus on my tasks and not get distracted by hand pain!

The product in question is made by Loftmat, which produces various sizes and configurations of cushioned wrist rests for mouse and keyboard.

YouGotHelp’s weekly Post: “What’s Next with Alexa” on Fridays!

Today’s topic is about 3 neat Alexa features you may not know about, and could come in quite handy!

1.) Guard Mode: “Alexa, enable / disable Guard Mode”

Guard mode is a security feature that listens for abnormal noises like shattering glass to determine a potential intrusion into your home. When you leave for a trip, add peace of mind into your existing home security system by receiving notifications when such alerts are triggered.

2.) Whisper to Alexa: When it’s quiet around the house, such as night time and others are sleeping, you can whisper to Alexa and she will recognize this by whispering in response. While you can accomplish a similar effect by lowering the volume instead, this is quicker, and you can immediately get her to speak normally again by speaking normally as well!

3.) “Alexa, speak slower / faster”: If you have trouble understanding Alexa because of the speed of her voice, you can ask her to speak slower or faster. Slower helps her annunciate more and gives you more time to comprehend her responses. Meanwhile, if you feel impatient during one of her long responses, you can move things along by speeding her up.

If you have any questions about the Alexa devices in your home, you can comment right here on this post!

YouGotHelp is “Your Printer Pal”: a weekly Thursday post!

Printers are still highly relevant in the digital age: people seem to just prefer paper in many circumstances!

Whether used for advertising flyers to let people know about your local events, or to hand-sign important legal and work documents, printers are at the center of nearly every office at home and at work.

There are 3 primary ways we connect to printers: via USB plug, Ethernet plug, or Wi-Fi. In this quick post, we’ll explore the differences:

USB: USB is one of the most common device plugs you’ll find! They come in various plug types and lengths, but for printers are generally used to directly connect to one computer.

Ethernet: A plug used for internet connections, this method is common for offices that use many printers. That way, these printers don’t have to be tied down to each individual computer. Instead, everyone can print to a common area.

Wi-Fi: Similar to Ethernet, this method of wirelessly connecting to printers allows for many people to connect. In fact, this method can also allow for folks to print documents directly from their phones if connected to the same network! Also, it makes it easier for to manage as it involves less cables to organize and worry about.

If you have questions or issues with your printer, reach out to YouGotHelp right here on this Facebook post!
