MARL Studio
Supporting and Investing in pre-seed and early stage startups working on Engineering and Tech solution in Upstate New York.
We came in with a mission as a Startup Studio to increase pre-seed ideation and support students and first time founders with a funding model. Our initial effort was monthly startup competitions to find investment opportunities.
To continue the goal of fostering an inclusive ecosystem in the region, we have worked with the existing startup community particularly Upstate Venture Connect, NextCorps, Ain Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Rochester, Startup Grind ROC, Innovation Square
Together with the Rochester startup ecosystem MARL Startup Studio will continue our commitment to the region:
* Help optimize the retention of graduates from University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. John Fisher University, Nazareth College and SUNY Brockport
* Help get additional funding and mentorship to existing startup community
* Continue to expand and amplify on the map as a robust entrepreneurial ecosystems.
We look forward to continuing Podcast with ROC Vox Recording & Production

Evidence of Startups Progress in Upstate -
Here are some great themes that came from our conversation with Upstate Venture Connect's Nasir Ali:
Here are five key insights:
1) Rochester alone has 19 colleges and almost 100,00 students. We have the ability to attract talent from all over the world. In order to have students stay in the area we need ways to engage them outside of the campus and build relationships with them.
2) Mentorship is a key factor in building strong relationships between students and the community.
3) A core principle is not reciprocity; but rather “pay it forward.” Another way to say this is “the goal is not that you try to repay me, but you try to help somebody else because everyone's on a journey and there'll always be people that can use what you have learned.”
4)Everyone is looking for a tribe to belong to. It is important to create access to your community so that people can find their affinities.
5) Creating a robust ecosystem takes a dedicated decade. We are just beginning to see tangible proof of intentions started long ago. The continual building of relationships and showcasing of success stories requires continual and deliberate attention.

The Minimum Viable Testing Process for Evaluating Startup Ideas The traditional approach is to do some customer research, throw an MVP out there as fast as possible, and hope it hits. After being early at three startups that achieved over $1M in run-rate in their first six months of going live, Gagan Biyani has landed on an approach that’s quite different. Her...
