Airigami
AIRIGAMI is a creative firm that specializes in colossal experiential installations.
We just built a satellite with the community at . May the fourth be with you!
We usually use this space to write about the latest Airigami projects. There’s usually some new sculpture being installed, or some community group I’m getting to work with, or some talk I’m giving about making art accessible. This time, instead, I (Larry Moss) am talking about a completely different sort of project. I’ve launched a podcast, Brush with Knowledge. In the first five episodes recorded, I’m not sure balloons were even mentioned once. But it is about art and community. Specifically, it’s about the world of teaching artists.
I’ve been a teaching artist for decades, bringing art into classrooms and community spaces. Sometimes (well, to be honest, most often) using balloons as the medium and mechanism for reaching learners. Other times, I’ve used magic, origami, electronics, and other things to teach. The reason we’ve appeared so often at Maker Faires around the world is because of the alternative learning opportunities they offer. Sure, Kelly and I love making art and showing off, but the most interesting projects are always the ones where others get to experience our art along with us rather than just view it after it’s created.
Over the last few years, I’ve been focusing more on teaching artistry than sculpture installations. Teaching Artists ROC, the organization that I run that puts other teaching artists into those same places (schools, libraries, museums, community centers, and more), has given me an opportunity to work with so many other teaching artists that I just want to share, not only what I do, but what others do out in the world. Brush With Knowledge gives me an opportunity to do that. Each episode features a different teaching artist.
So far, episodes have included Darren Stevenson from PUSH Physical Theatre, Unique Fair, Rosalie Jones from Daystar: Contemporary Dance- Drama of Indian America, and Annette Ramos from The Rochester Latino Theatre Company- RLTC. Coming this Wednesday is Ya'qub Shabazz Fine Art - Sankofa Studios.

We're looking forward to being at The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University for their QCA Collage event this Saturday. We hope to see a bunch of you there.
We are so excited to be participating in Maker Faire Syracuse for the third time. We’re not ready to say what we’re doing yet, but we hear that with the Faire being on May the 4th, there may be a space theme happening.
Meet the Makers of Maker Faire Syracuse 2024!
Airigami Bubble Murals are creative installations built by community members using easy to inflate latex balloons. This year at Maker Faire, small murals will be assembled into a 3D sculpture - the perfect visual of how many small efforts can create huge results!
Watch the mural take shape right in the center of the Horticulture Building!

Year in review — Airigami It is December. A time to look back at what we’ve done over the last year. You’re probably as busy as we are right now, so rather than bog you down with a ton of stuff, we’ll just hit some highlights that we never got around to blog about this year.
Beautiful day yesterday for a holiday parade in Ransomville, NY!
That’s a wrap for this year’s - we created a new twist on our activity! Visitors to the helped to create the jumbo batteries that “powered” our balloon light bulb (flip the pics to see!)
Would you believe there are two walls and a floor in this pic? It’s the c*c wall at the Airigami studio. Getting it ready for some upcoming shoots- and a very busy weekend! See you at !!
Still time to check out our and all of the other incredible exhibits here at ‘s
Taking a break from building at the Bay Area to chat about materials. It’s easy to forget that most folks don’t use balloons as a building material. 🙂this visitor was curious as to whether the balloons would hold up- the squish test assuaged his concerns!
We had a great time recently at Rochester Museum and Science Center. We were tasked with getting the museum's mastodon, Murray, into the air using nothing but helium balloons. Kids of all ages played with a single helium balloon and various weights to try to predict the number of balloons that would ultimately be needed for the task.
Murray the mastodon became Murray the mathtodon as kids used him to help with their calculations. Variations in the way balloons were inflated and the slow loss of helium from balloons throughout the day contributed to some differences between calculations and the final result, making it more fun to do the final launch. And then even further fun and adventure was had as things went, well, a bit off from the plan.
All balloons and mastodons lifted into the air were tethered at all times. No mastodons were harmed during the making of this video.
We look forward to doing more at RMSC and with Teaching Artists ROC.
It took 14 balloons to lift Murray! If you’re here at 2 you can help us figure out how many more it will take to lift him with his camera gear and wave to his sky camera for his tiny tethered trek!
Murray the Mastodon is planning a little trip this Saturday at Rochester Museum & Science Center. He asked Airigami for a little help to do it safely. Join us Saturday afternoon to find out how many helium balloons Murray needs to fly. Visit any time this week to get a photo in an Airigami hot air balloon (resting safely on the ground in the museum lobby).
If you want to see what this turns into- you’ll have to stop by the Rochester Museum and Science Center on Monday, we’ll be installing in the morning right by the gift shop and and newly painted entry columns! Can’t wait to see them in person!
Someone is getting ready for a little adventure next week at Rochester Museum and Science Center But first! A safety harness!
