A Chance For Each Nonspeaker

(Sometimes Henry’s posts are spelled all in one sitting, and others he works on over a few days. He is generally full of things to write about nonspeakers, and comes up with his topics entirely independently. Today we returned to a post he had begun earlier, and then he was stumped, so I asked him a question. ALL CAPS is Henry’s spelling, and lower case is my questions/comment. -Cynthia)

I LIKE WRITING POSTS. IT IS NOT EASY, BUT IT IS IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO LEARN SO NONSPEAKERS CAN BE HELPED. HELPING THEM IS SUPER IMPORTANT. I WANT EACH OF THEM TO GET THE CHANCE TO HAVE A TEACHER TEACH THEM HOW TO USE A LETTERBOARD. THEY CAN DO IT EVEN THOUGH IT LOOKS TO OTHERS LIKE THEY ARE STUPID. THAT IS THE WAY IT ALMOST ALWAYS LOOKS AT FIRST, BUT EVERYTHING WILL CHANGE AND YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU MADE THE EFFORT.

My nonspeaker can’t do Spelling to Communicate, because they don’t know how to read.

THAT IS HARD (Went and sat in the corner for several minutes)
HARD TO HEAR ABOUT PEOPLE NOT BELIEVING THEIR CHILD CAN READ. I LEARNED TO READ SOMETIME WHEN I WAS TINY AND I AM SURE OTHER AUTISTICS DO THE SAME. JUST BECAUSE THEY CANNOT SPEAK THE SENTENCES DOES NOT MEAN THEY DON’T KNOW HOW TO READ.

NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN HELPING NONSPEAKERS TO COMMUNICATE. FORGET YOUR ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT WHAT THEY CANNOT DO AND HELP THEM SO THEY ARE NOT LEFT IN SILENCE.

A HUGE thank you to York School district 1!! Thank you so much for your enthusiasm, experience, transparency, out of the box thinking & dedication to our students. The sense of team work & focus on FUNCTIONAL goals almost had me in tears! I'm excited for this school year for our York kiddos.
