Congratulations to Ms. Ramsey and Alligood’s ATC FFA students who have TWO groups of finalists for the ACRE: Seeds for Success student grant program through the SC Department of Agriculture. This program mimics what adult entrepreneurs can pursue for business funding. (Think of it as Shark Tank for students with Ag Business ideas)

As of today, we don’t know if these two teams won yet however since they are finalists both teams secured at least $1,000 in grant money for their projects.

The winner of the program will have $5,000 in funding, second place will have $3,000 in funding and the third place will have $2,000 in funding.

Congratulations again to everyone involved!

York County, SC: On Saturday afternoon April 20th, York County experienced a line of severe storms which produced strong winds, large hail and heavy rainfall. As a result, there were numerous power outages, trees and power lines down blocking roads, and significant property damage.
The York County Office of Emergency Management, along with the York County Tax Assessors Office and York County Planning & Development Services, spent Tuesday April 23rd conducting assessments of the areas impacted the most by the storm. This assessment found five homes destroyed, 17 homes with major damage, and hundreds with minor damage. While there are very few impassable roads, there are multiple areas with large amounts of natural debris along the roadways.
The York County Office of Emergency Management has been working closely with numerous volunteer organizations. These organizations are active within the area conducting multiple different functions. Currently, more organizations are reaching out to assist with all aspects of recovery from the storm.
A major function of many of the volunteer groups is the cleanup of debris throughout our community. If you need assistance with debris removal, cutting fallen limbs or trees away from homes or vehicles, or tarps to cover roof damage, please call 803-250-3679.

Contracting Solicitations
York County Government has concerns about some contractors going door to door with business cards, trying to solicit your business following the storm. We encourage all property owners to work with reputable businesses who are licensed and insured in South Carolina. Look at customer reviews, check BBB ratings, compare estimates from multiple companies, and ask for estimates in writing.

ATC Construction teacher Mr. Casey Laymon was invited by Rock Hill Schools Science Instructional Specialist Ms. Kimberly Massey to talk to York Road Elementary students about the construction and design of Shear Walls used in building houses so they can withstand wind and seismic forces. Mr. Laymon created models of the two wall structures and demonstrated the forces and waves put on each using a simulator and student participants!
Thank you Mr. Laymon for showing these students how a subject they read about is used in the real world, which is what ATC instructors do best!
