Chicago has many Physical Therapy deserts preventing many people from receiving the appropriate care for their musculoskeletal injuries and pain. This article surveyed 47 residents in the large Austin neighborhood and identified 3 barriers to access of Physical Therapy; proximity to PT clinic, cost, and lack of knowledge about Physical Therapy. Mobile Physical Therapy eliminates the need for patients to travel to a busy clinic and offers more available times to schedule appointments than a typical clinic. Outpatient Home Physical Therapy is a much needed service throughout the Chicagoland area.

Access to Physical Therapy in a Medically Underserved, Urban Community - PubMed Three barriers were identified by community residents and HCPs, all are modifiable factors. Future research should focus on increasing awareness about the benefits of PT and developing low-cost PT options. The PT desert identified in this study highlights the needs of underserved communities.
