At Skola, we plan to spend a lot of time outdoors and incorporate project-based learning. There’s no denying the benefits of outdoor time for play and exploration and there’s no denying that many adults could use more fresh air too! At Skola we hope to use our cool outdoor space as often as we can. Project-based learning (PBL) is a relatively new term that is supported by tons of educational research. Most of us agree that driving kids toward standardization and piling on more and more testing doesn’t actually prepare them for the future. PBL allows students to weave different subjects together, collaborate with others, practice real-life time management, and simply makes learning more authentic and fun. I’m Kristin Fink, the founder of Skola Microschool and I’ll be teaching too, alongside Ginger Montezon. I’m really excited to share Skola with you. Think of it as the modern, one-room school house. Our goal is to be centered around learning, and design a day where K-8 kids play together, collaborate together, and celebrate one another in community.
