No power yet, but lights are hooked up; powering them with a generator to extend the work day. Evaporative cooling system is mostly complete.
It’s a burn day
Exterior is close to being done. It will probably be a couple of months before I get the electricity hooked up by PG&E so it may be a while before the interior is finished.
Update: Front endwall is covered, gable fan mostly installed, curtain system coming along, electric service panel mounted on new pole
I cleared the brush and trees off this hillside but I left this wild fig tree—for now
Making progress on the evaporative cooling system, installing electrical conduit, and finishing preps for the shade curtain install… an excavator will be onsite next week so we will shift back to working on the in-ground utilities
Progress on the endwalls and interior
The second sidewall is done, along with a door and some work on the back endwall.
I have a wall
If I had to sell today, I could market it as a really nice carport 😄
I have half of a roof
Making progress on the roof; gravel on the floor and road
A lot of activity today: trusses were lifted in place, holes were dug for the bench anchors, and I burned a bunch of brush.
A lot of progress this week. The trusses will probably go up next week. That will be exciting to see!
10/26/23 - Post foundations poured full of concrete, all utility line inspections complete, utility trench refilled with dirt and compacted
10/25/23: The last two tall posts are staged, all six utility lines are in the trench, pressure drop test of lines completed, and trench under the access road is being refilled
Greenhouse posts are staged for pouring the foundation
Greenhouse update:
This week - Foundations, utility trench, gravel
It was a lot of work unloading the greenhouse shipment yesterday
Grading is complete on my greenhouse pad! I posted a summary of the work on YouTube

How I Get Ripe Fruit from my Fig Trees in a Single Year - A great thing about fig trees is that you can take a small cutting and turn it into a fig tree that will produce good tasting fruit in less than one year. The ability to produce fruit in a single growing season is not only a rewarding experience for impatient people like me, but it also enables growers to improve decision making by providing an initial look at the fig variety within a one year timeframe. In this video I describe the strategies I use to maximize the probability that I get figs from my new trees in their first year.

This is part 2 of 2 of my best "new" fig varieties for 2021. I was able to try a lot of new varieties in 2021, and I summarize and rank some of the varieties that were memorable for me this year in this video. My list includes some rare varieties that not many growers have, and are probably considered "new" by most definitions, but it also includes some varieties that are just newer for me personally, or for which there is not a lot of information about. I tried not to simply create a list of "hot new figs" that everyone is talking about but instead list the figs that were impressive to me personally for some reason. My experience is heavily influenced by my own growing conditions and methods; during the 2021 season I grew my figs in Northern Virginia and I used pots for all the figs I described. I also use grow lights and a greenhouse to give my figs a headstart in the spring, and hopefully a little extra growing season.
I hope you enjoy this summary of my "new" fig varieties for 2021!
